Should They Be Allowed in Feilding?
ITINERANT AUCTIONEERS At question time at Thursday's meeting of the Feilding Borough Council the effect on retail business of visiting itinerant auctioneers was rcfeiTcd to by Cr. S. D. Pearce, who desired to know whether the council had any power to deal with the position. The practice seriously interfered with the genuine retail business of the town, and the speaker submitted that it was not right that itinerant auctioneers, who contributed nothing to the revenue of the town, should be permitted to engage in such trade. Established businesses of the town contributed rates and taxes, and the sales conducted by visiting auctioneers, who came with a load of goods which they unloaded on to the public, were making serious inroads into legitimate retail trade. Cr. Pearce understood that other towns had taken action to put a stop to the practice, and he hoped something could be done in the ease of Feilding. The Mayor (Mr. C. E. Taylor) promised to have the position looked into.
