MRS. A. J. SMITH. Palmerston North has lost a great worker for charity in the death of Mrs. Lilian Kate Smith, wife of Mr. Alfred James Smith, of 12 Sydney street, which occurred this week. Born and educated at Timaru, the deceased lady was a daughter of Mr. William Makepeace Howe, a well-known business man of that town. Hollowing her marriage Mrs. Smith lived for some years at Gisborne, but later took up her residence in Palmerston North. On several occasions Mrs. Smith had accompanied her husband on business and pleasure trips to Canada and the United States, Mr. Smith having lived in America prior to coming to New' Zealand and he still lias a brother there. It was Mrs. Smith’s practice to keep a diary of her visits abroad and she frequently entertained friends with readings therefrom. She was a member of the Manawatu Women’s Club, the Manawatu Bridge Club, the. Practice Bridge Club and the St. Vincent, de Paul' Society. Her principal object in life was centred in helping those Joss fortunately placed, particularly the

children, and by her passing many who have benefited by her gracious acts have lost a generous friend. A feature of the service held at St. Patrick's Church yesterday morning prior to the cortege proceeding to the cemetery was the singing by a large number of children who had attended to pay their last respects to one wiio had greatly endeared herself to them.
