Feilding Borough

MEETING OR COUNCIL ■ The monthly meeting of the Fcilding Borough Council was held last evening, the Mayor (Mr. C. E. Taylor) presiding. There were also present Crs. E. Fair, T. Collins, S. D, Pearce, A. C. McCorkindalc, D. Pryde, J. Corpe, A. H. Maguire and G. Kilvington. A request from the W.E.A. committee for a donation of £5 towards its funds was held over until the new year's estimates were under consideration.

Accounts amounting to £257 10/9 were passed for payment, and accounts amounting to £2059 5/9, paid since the last meeting, were approved. The Mayor reported, on behalf of the special committee set up to deal with the matter, that an agreement had been readied with the abattoir contractor to reduce charges ou all pigs by Id., and the committee therefore recommended that the abattoir charges on all pigs bo reduced by 2d. as from May 1 next. The council agreed to this. Air. V. E. Smith, Feilding’s representative on the Palmerston North Hospital Board, wrote advising that. the board was opposed to the proposed free ambulance organisation, and on tho motion of the Mayor it was decided to advise the Free Ambulance Committee that the council could not support the proposal.

In connection with donations amounting to £lO, received through the Feilding branch of the B.S.A. for tho relief of unemployed returned men, the Mayor explained that tho idea was that the council provide a subsidy of 10/ in the £1 and arrange for tho use of the money under a No. 2 relief scheme, whereby tho employer paid 0/ per day for any men employed. By this system £l2O worth of work was made available. Tho council agreed to the granting of the subsidy, and the Mayor stated that the operation of the scheme would relieve the No. 5 scheme to the extent of the number of returned men, totalling 30.

A request for I he provision of a second footpath in South street, made by Air. F. S. Guy and others, was deferred, the council deciding that, the claims of other streets more closely settled were a long way more urgent than Ihe subject of the application. In connection with the request* of Air. A. E. Wilson for attention to the footpaths in Harford street, the council decided to review lie matter when the laying of further concrete paths was contemplated. The writer’s request for attention to the lighting of the street was referred to the street lighting committee for a report. The council agreed to inform the Feilding Caledonian Pipe Band that a subsidy of £lO towards the band's funds on account, of the past year was available.
