How They Ran

Wisteria's Runaway Victory Historian was a firm favourite for the first event. The grey started we!J and was in the picture six furlongs from home, but he did not go on with it, and the Palmerston North-trained AVisteria, second in the betting order, scored a runaway victory, with Shaun Spadah in second place. King Bruce broke at the start and took no real part in the race. Tho leaders past the stands tho first time were Storm Queen, Shaun Spadah, Wisteria and Historian. Marvin Bingen tripped and canio down in front of tho stewards’ stand. Going Tound the turn AVisteria joined Storm Queen in the van, and they led along tho back from Shaun Spadah and Historian. At the half mile AVisteria assumed command, and she opened up a big gap on the others, turning for home well clear of Storm Queen, with another gap to Shaun Spadah. The result was never in doubt, Wisteria winning easily by five lengths. Shaun Spadah finished well to beat Storm Queen by a couple of lengths. Historian was fourth, just in front of Bolinda King.

The Favourite Scores El Merit (£146) was installed favourite for the Gorge Handicap and she won well. Summertime (£107) w r as second in the betting order, but she broke at the start, losing a lot of ground, and this settled her chances. Summertime and Aerial Boy broke when the flag dropped and Amy Etawah was the early leader from El Merit, Nelson’s Bequest and Summertime. Through the straight Amy Etawah was bowling along in front, followed by El Merit, Nelson’s Bequest, Hue Coronado, La Campione, Summertime and Aerial Boy in that order, the field being well spread out. Amy Etawah broke going out of the straight and the favourite went to the front to lead along tho back from Nelson’s Bequest, Amy Etawah, Hue Coronado and Summertime. There was little alteration over the next bit, although Summertime was closing on tho others. El Merit turned for home just in front of Nelson’s Bequest, with Amy Etawah three lengths back, third, ami Summertime next, Nelson’s Bequest looked likely at tho bottom of the straight, but ho broke, and El Morit wont on to win nicely by two and a half lengths, Amy Etawah getting up in time to beat Nelson’s Bequest for second money. Summertimo was fourth, and then came Hue Coronado and La C.ampione.

Daddy Longlegs Shows the Way Home Frco Logan (£180) and Spocial Sun (£106) wcro sorted out as the likely ones for the Dash Handicap, but tI;o winner turned up in tho Ashkursttrained Daddy Longlegs, which, well handled by his owner, H. M. Tagg, was in front all the way and finished on to beat Special Sun, which got up in time to head off tho favourite by a narrow margin. Murckimes and Tui Coronado tangled at tho start, while tho favourite took time to find his feet. Daddy Longlegs was first away from Specirl Sun, Dree Logan and Lady Coronado. Turning into the back stretch Free Logan ran up to Daddy Longlegs, and the pair showed the way along the and into the straight from Special Sun and Lady Coronado. At tho bottom ct the straight Daddy Longlegs drew out and event on to win nicely by a lofrom Special Sun, which hdaded Free Logan on the post. Lady Coronado finished fast on tho outsido and was only another head away from the third horse. It was a great finish.

Outsides Takes the Big Money Nino started in the Manawntu Trotting Club Plate, and the heavy end o the stake was collected by tho outsider, Highland Derby, which won from end to end. Silver do Oro, Sandown and Capilano carried most money. Hilltop caused trouble at the start, and when the flag dropped Native Berry whipped round, interfering with tho favourite. Highland Derby began well and led out of tho straight from Rangihau, Sandown, Whippet, Silver de Oro (whu i was galloping), Capilano and Arabond. At tho ond of tho first half milo High land Derby was still in front, with Rangihau, Whippet and Sandown as his nearest attendants. Running through tho straight the order was Highland Derby, Rangihau, Whippet, Sandown, Capilano and Arabond. There was no alteration over the next live furlongs, and the field was well strung out. Running to the homo turn Sandown headod Rangihau and turned into tho straight four lengths behind Highland Derby. The issue was never in doubt, and Highland Derby finished strongly to beat Sandown by tlvreo lengths, Rangihau being a dozen lengths further back, just ahead of Arabond. The winner paid a substantial dividend. Rector Sets the Face

There were 13 starters in the Komako Handicap, and Cracker (£122), Astral (£9B) and David McElwyn (£79) carried most money, with Rector, the winner, next in demand. Rector was first to begin, and led through the straight from Marvin Bingen, Cracker, David McElwyn, Luminate, Shaun Spadah and Astral. Rector was still acting as pacemaker as they turned into the back, and at tho half mile was showing the way to Crackor, Marvin Bingen, David McElwyn, Luminate and Astral, the leading division being bunched. Going across the top Astral moved up fast and, turning into the straight, was just behind Rector, followed by Davit McElwyn. Once in line for the judge Rector put in a good finishing run, and appeared to be holding Astral safo when

the latter broke. Rector went on to win by a length from David McElwyn which was a longth and a half ahead of Luminate. Cracker was fourth and Astral fifth. Four-liorso Race Tho Pohangina Handicap was a fourhorse race, Nativo Berry being withdrawn after she had done her preliminary. Astral carried over half tho machine, and repaid his supporters’ confidence after lying in behind Mikad for most of tho journey. Teri Kingi went up in the air at the start, and Mihnd showed tho way through tho straight from ’Astral, Daddy Longlegs and Ten Kingi. There was no change during the running, and Mihad turned for home first just in front of Astral, Daddy Longlegs being a couple of lengths further back. Mihad finished on well, but half way down tho straigh* Astral went to the front to win well by half a length' from Mihad. Daddy Longlegs was a length further away, third.

Summertime Fails to Sec it Out La Campione (£111) aud Summertime (£96) were the best backed of the six starters in the McDonald Handicap, and they returned the dividends. A chain off the post Summertime looked like winning, but she failed to seo it out and La Campiono responded under pressure to get the decision on the post. Amy Etawah led out of tho straight the first time from Summertime, La Campione and Hue Coronado. Nelson’s Request would not settlo down. Going along the back Summertime went to the front, and at the half mile was leading from Amy Etawah, La Campiono and Hue Coronado. There was no alteration into the straight, but passing the stands La Campiono went up to the leader and, boring in, fouled Summertime’s sulky. Summertime and La Campione drow away from tho others, and during the second round they had the Tace to themselves. Summertime turned for home just in front of La Campione and appeared to be holding him safe, but she faltered over the last bit ami La Campione won by a neck. Amy Etawah was eight lengths back, third, and then came Hue Coronado and Aerial Boy. An inquiry was held after the race and W. Dyer, driver of tho winner, was fined £5 for careless driving.

Silver de Oro Gets Through The bracketed pair, Special Sun and Sandown, wcro backed down to a short price in the last race, which attracted tho biggest pool of the day. All Red was second choice with just over hall the money invested on tho favourites. Mr. Guy and Lady Coronado refused to leave tho mark, and Special Sun was tho early leader from Murchimes, Tennessee’s Child, Silver do Oro, All Red and Sandown. Going into the back stretch Special Sun and Murchimes were in the van from Silver do Oro and Tennessee’s Child, and All Red and Sandown were together next, tho field being bunched. Running past the half mile All Red went up fast, and as they approached the home turn Special Sun and Murchimes were together in front,

closely followed by All Red, Silver de Oro and Sandown, which was moving up. The leaders swung wide at the turn, Silver de Oro and Sandown going through. Silver do Oro hit the front at tho distance and went on to win comfortably by four lengths from Sandown, with Special Sun two lengths further away, third. All Red was fourth and tho next to finish were Murchimei and Tennessee's Child.
