P.N. COMMITTEE DISCUSSES WEEKLY BUSINESS.

Mr. J. A. Nash, M.P., presided at Saturday’s meeting of the Palmerston North Unemployment Committee. Other members present were Messrs A. E. Mansford (Mayor), J. Batchelor, D. Collis, J. H. Dixon, J. Hodgens, A. J. Graham and J. Lowden (secretary). P.W.D. Camp at Coley’s Bend.

Tho secretary reported that the Public Works Department intended to establish a camp at Coley’s Bend, in the Makcrua, and that 100 men would bo employed to straighten the bend. He could not say whether the men were coming from Wellington or not. The Mayor asked if there were any men in tho Palmerston North district who would be prepared to go into this camp if the opportunity offered; Tho secretary could not say offhand. The Mayor then suggested that it would be as well to get into touch with the Public Works Department to find 'out whether Palmerston North district men could bo placed on the Coley’s Bend job.

Tho secretary was instructed to notify the County Council that in connection with work being carried out on farms which was not of direct benefit to the council that tho farmers should be asked to keep the men employed during the fourth week.

Six applications for labour under the 4A scheme were considered and approved.
