Squalls Follow Hot Weather in Sydney
YACHTS OVERTURNED IN HARBOUR. United Tress Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. Received Sunday, 7.30 p.m. SYDNEY, Feb. 21. Yesterday was extremely liot in the city, the temperature reaching 100.6 at 2.40 p.m., but at 5.30 p.m. sudden fierce squalls came up out of the south. Sailing craft of all descriptions, which had been engaged in various yacht races and pleasure jaunts on the harbour, were on their way home when the storm came and many of the smaller fry capsized. A dense black pall of cloud settled down and twin waterspouts appeared among the big yachts, one striking the 21-footer N.S.W. and overturning it. The owner of it, Mr. Wedderburn, manager of Sydney Ferries, and his crew just had time to tic a buoy to a long line to mark the spot where the craft was sinking when they found themselves in the wmter, whence they were taken by a launch piloted by Mr. Dally Messenger, who raced to the scene. Among other victims was the yacht Arawatta, the ex-champion 18-footer. Fortunately among all the upsets there were no personal casualties.
