Bookmakers Object to Competition by Board
OPEN WARFARE THREATENED United Press Association. —By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. Received Sunday, 5.45 p.m. LONDON, Feb. 19. The Daily Telegraph’s turf correspondent states that open warfare threatens between bookmakers and the Betting Control Board, which conducts totalisators on the racecourses. The bookmakers are incensed by the operations of the board. The operation in many cities is simply tho transmission on commission of bets received to the totalisators on the racecourses, and the bookmakers contend that the’ control board, in accordance with the Act, should restrict its activities to racecourse betting. A meeting of starting-price bookmakers has been called to combat the •“etc” by offering clients 5 per cent, above ‘'tote” odds.
