Big South African Diamond Mines to Close
RESULT OF MARKET SLUMP. United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. Received Friday, 7.45 p.m. CAPETOWN, Feb. 19. The directorate of De Beers Diamond Mines has decided to close the mines for an indefinite period, pending an improvement in the world’s diamond market. Tho decision becomes effective on March 31 and affects 1500 whites and many thousand natives, and the probable curtailment of expenditure in the Union of wages amounting to £2,250,000. A number of whites wil be retained on part-time. Those dismissed will receive liberal cash payments-
