Foxton

HOLDING OF HORSE SPORTS NOT YET DEFINITE

From Our Own Correspondent.

A well-attended mooting of tho new-ly-formed Foxton Sports Club was held on Tuesday evening, when there were present Messrs. W. T. Jewell (president), W. E. Barber, G. F. Smith, C. M. Hewctt, Cartor, S. W. Barber, J. Barber, J. Burr, J. S. Shorthouse, Barron, Tutty, Austin, J. M. Thomson, R. Hoppncr, F. Robinson, G. Woods, D. Christie, H. Hamer and J. L. Christie (secretary). Great disappointment was expressed when the chairman announced that, owing to tho fact that tho new club had not been registered, it was very doubtful whether the liorso sports meeting, which had been practically arranged to tako place next month, could bo held. He referred to tho fact that some time ago the Racing Conference had granted a permit to tho Foxton United Sports Association for tho holding of a. horse sports meeting. That club had never availed itself of the permit, which had lapsed. After discussion it was decided to tako immediate steps to endeavour to secure a special permit. It was also decided that, in the event of any difficulty arising out of the fact that the now club had not yet been registered, application for the permit bo made in the name of the Foxton United Sports Association, of which body Mr. Jewell is also president. Should the permit bo granted to the United Sports Association, the sports would bo held under the auspices of that club. It was decided to leave the arranging of events for school children in the hands of Messrs. Hewett and Robinson, who are to interview tho school committco with a view to ascertaining what assistance would bo available. It was decided to apply forthwith for a license to conduct a publican’s booth on the grounds. REVENUE FROM LIGHT AND POWER At the monthly meeting of the Horowhenua Electric Power Board the following comparative statement of revenue for tho ten months of the current financial year was submitted by the treasurer (figures for tho previous corresponding period are given in parentheses): Domestic lighting, £9661 (£9021); commercial lighting, £1313 (£1396); domestic heating, £6535 (£5992); commercial heating, £lOlO (£1060); power, £9034 (£9925); domestic water heating, £2196 (£1968); commercial water heating, £1832 (£1652); street lighting, £1027 (£1017). The total receipts were £35,628 (£35,031), a net incrcaso of £587. Discounts allowed to the end of January amounted to £3105, as against £1699 for the same period last year. Commenting on tho figures, the treasurer stated: ‘‘lt will bo seen that power sales are still down, but with a number of tho fiaxmills working again there should be a distinct improvement for tho remainder of tho year. Sales for domestic purposes continue to show very satisfactory increases, the additional amount received this year being £l4ll. The total outstanding in sundry debts is £5161, which is a slight increase on last month. Nineteen cut-off notices were sent out during the month, but only two consumers were actually disconnected.”

In moving the adoption of the report the chairman (Mr. G. A, Monk) said that the position revealed was very much as it was last month. Whether tho restoration of somo of the flaxmills would help the power position would remain to bo seen during the rest of tho quarter. It was very satisfactory from the board’s and the district’s point of view that some of the mills had been able to make a start. With regard to the slight increase in the accounts outstanding, ho presumed that this was the effect of tho holiday season. Tho engineer reported that a general overhaul of tho lines on tho Foxton mills circuit had been carried out. Two flaxmills, working four strippers, had started working last week, and anothei mill, with one stripper, was expected to bo in operation early next week. Commenting on the arrangement regarding the peak load of flaxmills, the chairman said it was satisfactory to know that the department was prepared to meet tho board. It was helpful to tho board, and certainly must bo so to tho mill owners. The reports wero adopted. BOWLING A further game for the Nye Ferns was played on the local green on Wednesday afternoon, when a challenging rink, skipped by Rooro easily won the trophies. In the absence of Mattar and Christie the vacancies in the holders’ rink were filled by Heppncr and Huntley. Details are as follow: Tawhai, Yardley, Heppncr, Huntley (s.) lost to Crotty, Robinson, Trueman, Rooro (s.) 10 —27. A match for the Kinneburgh Feathers was played on Saturday last, when a rink from Levin, skipped by Bull, succeeded in wresting tho trophies from the local rink, which has recently staved off a number of challenges by tho Levin Club. Details arc as follow: Pike, Challies, J. Brown, Bull (s.) beat Robinson, Heppner, John Ross, Woods (s.) .27-17. Tho Foxton Club will be represented by D. Christie and J. M.
