Mumbling Church
Holy Trinity Church, the Minories London, is called tho mumbling church because it enjoyed exemption from episcopal authority in matters ecclesiastical and claimed tho right to marry all comers without banns or -icenso. Many clandestine marriage ceremonies, therefore, wore doubtless mumbled over there. In 1687 a determined effort was made to put a stop to these irregular marriages. Yet in a few years the old practices were resumed in defiance of the bishop. In 1691 about 1000 marriages were solemnised, the next year 1060. One incumbent, aMr "Weston, in a period of loss than eight years (16791686) solemnised 5600 weddings.
