Springboks Thrash England
Thrilling Game Seen by 70,000 HOME SIDE IN DESPERATE STRAITS United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. Received Sunday, Midnight. LONDON, Jan. 3. The Springboks, maintaining an unbeaten international record, won the key match of their tour by defeating England by seven points to nil in a terrific encounter, filled with thrills, in the presence of 70,000 spectators at Twickenham. The Africans dominated nine-tenths of the game. They outweighed and outshoved the English pack and proved to be the possessors of much faster and nippier backs. They were also more effective tacticians. They attacked persistently, and only the dour defence and deadly tackling prevented a huge score. The visitors’ vigorous spoiling nullified every English effort to develop an attack, and the home side never looked like crossing the line. The Springboks fully deserved a wider margin of points. They* scored a lucky try in the first spell when Barr, tho English full back, neglected to touch down properly- and enabled two alert Africans to score unmolested. Tho Springboks scored a marvellous goal in the last three minutes, when in (ho semi-darkness Brand gathered the ball from y, free kick and dropped a beautiful goal from 40 yards out. R.. D, Gent, in tho Sunday Times, says tlie Springboks beat England fairly and squarely. They were tho better side, if not quite to the extent of seven points, and they won by the weigh and stamina of their forwards and the captaincy of Osier.
