RED SEAL VICTORIOUS IN THE CUP. INVERCARGILL, Jan.' 2. The Southland Racing Club's summer meeting opened in dull and wet weather. The track was heavy and there was only a small crowd. The totalisator handled £10,370 10s for seven events, compared with £15,307 10s for eight last year. Results:— A VENAL HIGHWEIGHT HANDICAP, of 140 sovs; 1} miles. I RIOTER (A. S. Rioter and Sailing Homo led out of the barrier but at tho far turn Rioter led Sailing Home, The Rector, Attractive Lady and Royal Limond. The field bunched turning for home but Rioter stayed on well to beat Royal Limond nicely by two lengths, ltombcau was a length away and then came Desert Glow. Time, 2.14 3-5.

Fair Weather was first to show out but First Money and Blue Metal soon drew clear from Palermo, Assemble and Greenaway. Ellis) 3 10 RED SUNSET (Jenkins) .... 2 4 GLENHAM LARK (Lcckic) .. 3 Also started: 2 Princess Argosy and Colonel Cygnus coupled, 7 Young Sentinel, 3 Pink Paper, 6 Bold Brigand, 11 Beth Cromwell, 8 Some Breeze, 5 Dazzling Eyes and Clatter coupled, 12 La Pompadour, 12 Nithvale, S Slamish, 12 Barada. Won. by one and a half lengths, hall a length. Time, 1.18. La Pompadour was first out but was soon joined by Princess Argosy, Young Sentinel and Trek. The last-named and Slamish moved up and into the straight Slamish led Trek, Young Sentinel, Princess Argosy, Bold Brigand, Glcnham Lark and Red Sunset. Trek drew out to beat the fast finishing Red Sunset by one and a half lengths. Young Sentinel -was half a length away, then came Bold Brigand. Royal Saxon and Kin Tin Tin led out from King Balboa. Down the back Bin Tin Tin and Royal Saxon led Charmainc, Stccton and Red Sea. Across tho top The Smuggler came fast, leading into tho straight with Charmaine, Red Sea, Royal Saxon, King Balboa and Black Duke following. At tho distance Charmaine retired and Red Sea challenged and a great finish saw Rod Sea head The Smuggler by three-quarters of a length. King Balboa, travelling very last, was half a length away followed by Black Duke, Charmaine and Stccton. OBETA TROT, of 140 sovs; 3.38 class. Ono and a half miles. 5 MADAM LOCANDA (Walsh) .. 3 4 PROBATIONER (Waite) .... - 5 WAVE SOON (Wallis) 3 Also started: 7 Gracile, 1 Speckled Gold, 3 Central Pointer, 9 Grey Girl, 6 Willow Wave, 2 Rco Chimes. Speckled Gold began very smartly and was followed past the stands by Wave Soon, Probationer and Madam Locanda. These four had tho race to themselves and crossing the top Madam Locanda put in a run and sustaining it beat Probationer by a length. Wave Soon was half a length away and then came Grey Girl. Solmuri, Enwood, Jack a’ Dandy and Miss Bcdowa were tho early leaders, and into tho straight Jack a’ Dandy and Soimar led Enwood and Cough. A great finish saw Cough beat the fast finishing Leading Boy by a neck, Jack a’ Dandy being half a length away. Then camo Bachelor’s Idol. WAIHOPAI HANDICAP, of 155 sovs.
