One viseountcy, live baronies, tlireo Privy Councillorships, tlireo baronetcies, 28 knighthoods and a large number of appointments and promotions in the various orders of chivalry are announced in the New Year honours list. The principal honours are:— Viscount: Baron Sankey, Lord Chancellor.

Barons: Clifford Allen, formerly chairman of the Independent Labour Party; Colonel Wilfrid Ashley, M.P., who was Minister of Transport in the last Conservative Government; Walter Guincss, M.P., Minister of Agriculture in the last Conservative Government; Stratton Jones, Liberal M.P. for Camborne, Cornwall; Sir William Mitchell Thompson, M.P., Postmaster-General in tho last Conservative Government. Privy Councillors: Major Walter Elliot, Financial Secretary to tho Treasury; Sir Thomas Inskip, Solicitor-Gen-eral; Colonel Sir Clive Wigram, private secretary to his Majesty. Baronets: Percy Harris, Liberal M.P. and formerly chairman of the London County Council; Sir Ilarrp Hope, M.P.; Arthur Samuel, M.P., Financial Secretary to the Treasury in the last Conservative Government.

The new knights include George Buckston Browne, surgeon, who endowed the house where Charles Darwin lived and gave it to the nation, and who has also given generous financial support to medical research work; Dr. Henry Dale, director-in-chief of tho National Institute for Medical Kcscarch and secretary of the Eoyal Society; Patrick Goddes, emeritus professor of botany, St. Andrews University, for services to education; Richard Hoylo Jackson, chairman of the Empire Cotton Growing Corporation; Thomas. McAra, secretary iof tho Newspaper Proprietors’ Association; Ernest Simmon, formerly Liberal M.P. and a member of the first National Government; Henry Wellcome, founder of the Wellcome Research Institution and tho Wellcome tropical research laboratories, Khartoum; Henry Wilkins, president of tho Co-operative Wholesale Society; and Major Mackenzie Wood, Liberal M,P. and assistant whip. John Buchan, M.P., the novelist, is appointed Companion of Honour for public, educational and literary services.

Lord Peel becomes Knight Grand Commander of the Star of India. In the Order of St. Michael and St. George, Sir Francis Humphreys, High Commissioner in Iraq, becomes Knight of the Grand Cross. Nevillo Henderson, British Minister at Belgrade, and Stephen Tallents, secretary of tho Empiro Marketing Board, become Grand Commanders.

Appointments in the Royal Victorian Order include Sir Walford Davies, doctor of music, to be commander. Among those awarded the Kaiser-i-Hind Medal is the former Speaker of the House of Commons, Mr. .T. H. Whitley, late chairman of the Royal Commission on labour in India.
