Heat Wave Continues
BROKEN HILL DISTRICT EXPERIENCES 120 DEGREES. THUNDERSTORM IN SYDNEY. United Press Association. —By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. SYDNEY, Doc. 31. Heated conditions continue inland. Burta station, 50 miles from Broken Hill, recorded 120 degrees yesterday; and Pooncaira, in the south-west, 118. Laxton, near Denmark, in South Australia, reported 117. Harvesting work in that district has been suspended for several days. Sheep arc dying in scores. A thunderstorm last night in the metropolitan area interfered with the electric services and plunged Parramatta into temporary darkness. HEAVY SHEEP LOSSES. Received Friday, 9.50 p.m. SYDNEY, Dec. 31. A grass fire which swept Corce sheep station near Narrandera destroyed 20,000 sheep which wero unable to escape from the flames. On an adjoining station 600 sheep perished ns well as a considerable number of cattle. Tho heat wave prevailing in the southern portion of New South Wales is causing extensive bush and grass fires in the wheat and pastoral areas. TEMPERATURES EASE Received Friday, 7.0 p.m. SYDNEY, Jan. 1. Southerly winds eased the temperatures generally along the eoast. Several persons collapsed owing to tho heat yesterday, one dying.
