Tho Plunkct Shield match between Canterbury and Wellington opened on the Basin Eescrvo this morning in a strong northerly gale. Runs came very slowly and at 125 Roberts, who had scored 22, hit ono from Newman to WeGirr at mid-on. Tho partnership had added 51 for the second wicket. Pago and Kerr carried tho total to 138 whero Kerr, who had been batting for 144 minutes for 46, played ono from Newman to leg and Lambert threw himself to tako a smart catch. Ho hit five fours. Cromb and Page added 30 for the fourth wicket but at 16S tho Canterbury captain, who was 27, had a dip at one from Lambert and hit tho leather into Hepburn’s hands at long-on. Lester came next and he and Cromb defended stubbornly. A section of the crowd became ironical but Cromb went on serenely with Ms defensive tactics which were quite justified as the wicket was drying and the ball was turning sharply. Cromb every now and then opened out to flash tho leather to the boundary with powerful, well placed shots and was 36 when stumps were drawn with the score standing at 199 for four wickets. Newman was tho best of tho 'Wellington bowlers, securing two wickets for 37 runs off 26 overs, 12 of which were maidens. At ono stage ho bowled seven maidens in succession. Dempster distinguished himself by dropping both Kerr and Cromb from easy chances at deep mid-on. Canterbury should run up a solid total to-morrow.
