Kilmister (N.Z.) Breaks Track Record , Twice During Night

Palmerston North’s third broadsiding meeting of tho 1931-32 season was held last evening, when some dazzling riding was witnessed. It must have been a well satisfied crowd that wended its homeward way from the Showgrounds, and it must have taken with it thrilling memories of somo of tho. finest racing yet seen on the local cinders. Kilmister (N.Z.), Jackson and Key (England) were brilliant, more reckless than ever, and yet superb. Their riding was a revelation. In tho international match series Kilmister proved an easy winner. He Todc magnificently and broke the track record by one-fifth of a second, shattering this in tlio final raco by fourfifths of a second to make tho new track record S-sec.

As far as points were concerned Kilmister led tho Englishmen by a safe margin, although Jackson had ridden well and was only a fraction behind. These resulted: Kilmister, 10 points; Jackson, 9 points; Key, 3 points. In the inter-city racing Wellington proved victorious by 32 points to Mahnwatu’s 20. Mr. G. Houston, of Palmerston North, was the popular announcer. All the races, except where mentioned, were from rolling starts. Tho weather was fine and the track was in good order. A spectacular start saw all three away in great fashion. Kilmistci took the lead, with Jackson and Key close up. The last-named then fell out with engine trouble. Later Kilmistcr’s chain gave out and Jackson finished alone. Second race: Wally Kilmister 1, Jack Jackson 2. Also started: Nobby Key. Time, S2 4-usee. —a track record. The previous record for Manawatu was established by "Squib” Burton on

March 4, 1931, when he did the four laps in S3see. Kilmister led Key, and Jackson tailed behind. Key was close up until the last lap, when engine trouble caused him to fall back and was out, with Jackson sailing into second place. Third race: Wally Kilmister 1, Nobby Key 2. Also started: Jack Jackson. Time, S-’sce. —the new track record. It had been disappointing that until now Key had not got going, but he was out after Kilmister this time. After a splendid start Kilmister led from tho bell. They raced around together and it was obvious that the record would again bo shattered. First race: Peter Phillips (W.) 1, Ron Vining (M.) 2. Also started: G. Lowndes (W.) and H. Tolley (M.) Time, 92sec. Tolley crashed at tho outset and was out of it. Phillips led Vining and Lowndes, this order being maintained all the way. Vining came in at a great pace and was gaining at the finish.

Second race: Eon Wc-ston (M.) 1, Alex Bait (W.) 2. Also started: E. Naylor (W.) and E. Whittle (M.). Time, 92 l-ssec. Weston roared into first place but was closely followed by Naylor, who rode splendidly. Bait was next and Whittle dropped out. After the others had traversed two laps, however, he came back and broadsided royally, although he could not overcome the handicap. Third race: Jack Gower (INI.) 1, Bernie Appleyard (W.) 2. Also started: E. Spencer (W.) and-D. Higgins (M.). Time, 87 3-ssec. Gower dashed to the front from the outset. Higgins crashed on a corner and the others came in slightly behind the leader, who rode a great race.

Eourth race: Eddie Naylor (W.) 1, Bon Vining (M.) 2. Also started: A. Bait (W.) and H. Tolley (M.). Time, 98 2-ssec. Vining was out of the race until the commencement of the third lap, when he was only led by Naylor. Tolley fell out with engine trouble and Bait ran into third place. ifth race: Peter Phillips (W.) 1, G. Lowndes (W.) 2. Also started: D. Higgins (M.) and J. Gower (M.). Time, 90sec. Phillips was the leader all the way and was closely attended by Lowndes. Both the Manawatu representatives were forced out wdth mechanical trouble.

Sixth race: Bcrnic Appleyard (W.) 3, Fred Spencer (W.) 2. Also started: E. Whittle (M.) and B. Weston (M.). Time, 95see. Whittle looked a sure winner until the third lap, when Appleyard beat him for the lead, and then, in the last round Spencer got ahead to capture second place. Weston had dropped out early in the contest.

Seventh race: Jack Gower (M.) 1, Alex Bait (W.) 2. Also started: E. Naylor (W.) and B. Higgins (M.). Time, 90sec. Gower rode magnificently and Higgins was well up, with the Wellingtonians behind. Gower lapped the other contestants, but Higgins had trouble and was outpaced by both the capital city men when ho was in an easy position for second honours. Eighth race: Howard Tolley (M.)l, Fred Spencer (W.) 2. Also started: B. Appleyard (W.) and B. Vining (M.). Time, 93 l-ssee. Tho spectators were delighted to see Tolley take the lead. Spencer took command in tho second lap, but was overhauled again in the third. Appleyard and Vining followed at fairly closo intervals. Ninth race: Bon Weston (M.) 3, G. Lowndes (W.) 2. Also started: P. Phillips (W.) and E. Whittle ' (M.). Time, 103 see. Whittle was riding in spectacular fashion at the commencement of the second lap, but crashed a moment later. Phillips was leading, followed by Lowndes and Weston. The last-named overhauled Lowndes and, when Phillips crashed, raced in to win. Grand New Year Handicap. For 36 selected riders; four laps; standing start.

Keen racing was witnessed by a large crowd at Western Springs speedway last evening when T. Farndon, English champion, and A. Mattson, the most prominent local rider, were in lino form. Tho track was very fast and some good times were made. Unfortunately, Farndon had trouble with his machine while Mattson fell while going well in more than one race. Results:— New Year’s Handicap: C.
