Mr. James Crofton, President of the Agua Caliento Racing Club, confirmed tho reports that all tho Agua Caliento stakes, including the handicap, would be reduced by half upon the resumption of racing. Tho prize for the latter race would therefore bo 50,000 dollars. Crofton declared that a slashing of tho purses was necessary, "otherwise wo never should be ablo to reopen.” Mr. Davies informed the Australian Press that the reduction in prize money for the handicap made no change to his plans. Ho received a cable announcing the departure of Phar Lap yesterday.
