ON TRENTHAM TRACK TWO-YEAR-OLDS SPRINTED | MERITOR LOOKS WELL In spito of several flue days, the galloping tracks at Trontkam, except thq back stretch of the two-year-old track, were closed yesterday morning, and any,’ work that was done had to be on the sand.

An inspection of the trial grass to-, vealed that there were three bad patches in the full circuit, near the seven, three and two furlongs., For the' rest it was soft, but in what iooked to be fair order. As no galloping facilities liavo been available to trainers for more than a 'fortnight, and rain is always a prospect at Trcntham, it would seem that the decision to deprive train-, ers of the first suitable occasion that came along was not altogether in their best interests. Should tho weather hold, there will be plenty of time in which to prepa/o horses for Wanganui;, but it is almost too much to expect that it will. All tho horses that competed at Riccarton have now returned, except Martian Chief, which will be racing at Gcraldino and Ashburton. Several of tho two-year-olds wero sprinted distances up to three furlongs. The going was soft, but was otherwise good. G. Jones’ pair, Rulanut (Chief Ruler '-Cocoanut) and Posy (Chief Ruler— BoscUatc), went well over a couple of furlongs, but were not timed. They are among tho most forward youngsters at the ccntro. J. W. Lowe’s pair. Sage (Gay Shield —Gloria Nut) and Lord John (Lord Quex —Bayonne), sprinted two furlongs in 2Gscc, and did their work pleasingly. Two Cape Korn youngsters in W Hawthorne’s stable, Golden Horn (from Eurella) and Gape of Good Hope (from Conflict), then ran down tho back, but were not timed. They have not yet been sprinted often. Tho English-bred colt Mullaboden (Torlonia —Tcmpleboden), a three-year-old in New Zealand time, and Redtop (Redfern —Tulpy) ran a couple of furlongs together in 29 3-sscc. The former is trained by 11. Pritchard and has only lately been galloped fast. He has recently been blistered because there was slight sign of a swelling in the near hind leg. Redtop is a rnembor of T. Pritchard’s team, at present in charge of G. Williams, while Pritchard is in Sydney.

H. Telford’s trio, the Tea Tray— Zany colt, tho Tea Tray—Ebba gelding and tho Tea Tray—Lady Violet gelding, moved nicely over three furlongs in 39 2-Oisec., after doing the first two furlongs in 25 3-sscc. The first-named appeared to be going best at the finish. Tho next three to sprint were J. McLaughlin’s pair, the Pombal—Veil colt and the Lord Quex —Ayah colt, and A. E. Browne’s Bowlands (Acre —Wairiporipo). The first-named, under a pull, remained with tho other pair for two furlongs and then went on alone to tho three-furlong peg, being steadied up because a trostlo was across the track, to register 40 3-sscc. The first two fur-' longs took 26 4-ssec., tho Pombal colt being in front at the point. It was the first fast sprint that Bowlands, a wellmodelled youngster, has had, but ha joined in the job quito unconcerned. S. J. Reid had Meritor (Limond— Merit) and Might (Limond —Graciosa), two colts, at the barrier for -■ practice, and then gave them a short sprint down: the back. Meritor, - which is a full-' brother to Lineage, particularly caught the eye as one of the neatest movers yet seen out on the track this year, and it will not surpriso if ho proves to be one of Trcntham’s best youngsters. Like all of Merit’s offspring, lie is a natural galloper.
