Y.W.C.A. Board Holds Monthly Meeting

A mooting of the Palmerston North Y.W.C.A. was held at the hostel yesterday afternoon. Those present were Mcsdames Sinclair (chair), Collins, Bcrnett, Phillips, Lee, Poiuton, Rutherfurd,' Misses Forrest, Fitz Gerald and Ashton. Apologies were received from Mesdames Grcig, Williams, West and Oliiver. The matron (Miss Hilgendorf) reported that there had been 16 casual and 22 permanent guests in the hostel during the month. Accounts amounting to £6O 7s 4d were passed for payment and it was decided to send letters of thanks to the Macarthy Trust and to the Palmerston North City Council for their donations to the general association funds.

Reports from tho house, finance and girls’ work committees were read and various recommendations made by them adopted. It was decided to hold a bridge evening an tho club room on August 21. The election of members to servo on the various committees resulted:—

House: Mesdames Ferguson (convener), Rutherfurd, Phillips, Poiuton, Lee, Mouldy (on leave), Sinclair; finance: Mesdames Barnett (convener), Phillips, Sinclair, Oliiver, Miss FitzGerald; girls’ work committee: Mesdames Williams, Oliiver, West, Grcig, Small, Stevens, Rountree, Berryman, Aitchisoh and Miss Cameron.

The secretary reported: “The number of active citizens on the roll is 40 —there are other girls on our books but who cannot come to club. The great number of wet club nights has meant that our average for the month has been small. The citizens’ programme has included folk dancing and physical culture, community singing, ceremonials, dramatics and vesper periods. The Dominion community gathering held in July was most successful. There were present about 35 visitors and over 4U citizens. Four girls were enrolled, and Miss Jean Edwards was declared a counsellor. The citizens gave a short programme of dramatics at the annual meeting. On Sunday next the Girl Citizens and their Counsellors will parade at St. Paul’s Methodist Church. This is the first church parade this year. The senior club has had a month full of activities. Tho girls have had ono evening with Mrs. Sinclair, in charge of sewing for the relief work, one with Mrs. West learning to make slippers, a talk on John Masefield and his poems, and one from Mrs. G. T. Brown on “Pictures we hang on our wall,” and had also a theatre party to Alan Wilkie’s entertainment at the Opera house. During July a meeting for unemployed girls and women was called. The secretary explained the idea of forming a friendly service bureau. Altogether 12 girls and women have registered with us and seven have been found work either permanently or by the day. It seems that the work in this direction will not develop into a big organisation but will of necessity mean dealing with individual cases and helping in small ways wherever possible. All the women’s organisations in the town were asked to announce it at their meetings, ft would appear that much time during tho coming months will have to be spent on the question of unemployment.” The meeting terminated with afternoon tea.
