France’s Surprise Schneider Cup Seaplane Meets With Disaster

The disaster which has overtaken Trance’s 1931 secret 2000-horse-power Lorraine Schneider Cup seaplane has considerably impaired this country’s chances in the cup race. While the ehjglno was on the testing ground, working with a full throttle, it suddenly stopped with a tearing, grinding sound, . hut the exact details are not available. It was fortunate that tbe machine was not aloft at tbe time, otherwise another tragedy could not have been averted. Britain Wins Draw British Official Wireless RUGBY, AUg. 14. In the presence of French and Italian, air attaches and the chairman of the Schneider trophy committee, the draw for the starting order of the machines in the Schneider race on September 12th, took place at the Royal Aero Club to-day, and resulted as follows: Great Britain first, France second, Italy third. Because he required ten hours to make the flight from Shanghai to KagoBhima (Southern Japan), which ordinarily takes five hours, the local authorities are questioning Mr F. C. Chichester, the New Zealand airman, to determine whether he landed en route.

Another Stage in the Journey CHICHESTER ALLOWED TO PROCEED. Received Friday, 8 p.m. TOKYO, Aug. 14. Chichester left Kagoshima at 10.25 this morning en route to Kasumigura, the naval airfield 50 miles northward of Tokyo. He is probably refuelling on the Katsura coast, , a hundred miles south of Osaka. He is expected at Kasumigura at seven this evening. He will be welcomed by the Japanese naval authorities. He then rests for a few days before proceeding to America via the Kuriles and Alaska. Although last evening’s examination failed to explain clearly the reasons of the delay in the flight from Shanghai the authorities allowed Chichester to continue, reserving further inquiries later.
