Manawatu Golf Club

BEST QUALIFYING ROUNDS FOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP.

Following are tho aggregates (best two of three rounds) of the players who qualified for tho club championship:— A. E. Ekstedt H. Hutchinson. ... 163 O. H. Druco .. .. 163 W. A. Keeling 163 K. Glendinniug 163 O. H. Williams 164 I. Mac Ewan 164 T. Louisson 164 C. G. Moore 166 J. G. Swainson 171 L. Seifert junr 173 W. E. Winks 173 R. G. Moore 175 A. E. Joblin 175 E. G. Sim 175 J. M. Taylor 177

The draw for tho first round of the championship has been announced and it is probable that several of tho games will be decided over tho week-end. The present club champion is Ekstedt and although ho is playing good golf at present ho will havo to produco his best to van in tho event for there arc a number of improving players engaged, any one of whom is capable of the highest golf. On paper the most important game in the first round is that between fan Mac Ewan and L. Seifert junr. and an epic struggle is forecasted. The former has been playing very well lately, a feature of his game being his driving. It is only a short while since ho equalled the best amateur figures for the course, though the score was not put up in competition play. On that occasion it was his work round the green which gave him his figures, the fairways being heavy after rain, fcicifert is a young player of outstanding ability and when in form his game is hard to fault. In addition ho has the right temperament for match play. It snould be a great match but it is unfortunate that they had to meet in tho first round. Mac Ewan is a scratch man and Seifert is on the two mark. Another good go should be that between Gilbert Swainson and Trevor Louisson. They are both playing good golf at present and each will make it hard for the other. Louisson’s handicap is five and Swainson’s six. The match between H. Hutchinson and E. G. Sim is remarkable for the fact that it will be the fourth time these players have met in tho club championship. W. A. Keeling (scratch) meets W. E. Winks (7) and tho game should be closer than the difference in handicaps would indicate. Keeling is playing good golf and would be a formidable ojqjonent for anyone if he had more confidence in his ability to determine and play the particular shot required. Winks is a much improved golfer and should reproduce his best form on the day.

The match between K. Giendmuing (4) and K. G. Moore (S) will bo another interesting one. Glendinniug at his best is a match for anyone and it will not be surprising to find him on tho scratch mark before the end of the season. Moore is always seen at his best in a match and is a hard man to beat being particularly dangerous when irons are called for. O. H. Drucc (0) will have to meet a promising player in A. E. Joblin (13). l)ruce is one of tho old brigaue and he has just made the change over to steel shafts. Ho is reliable with the wooden clubs and still gets plenty of length. Unco within range of the pin he is always dangerous. Joblin is a big hitter and if taken in hand would quickly reduce his handicap. O. H. Williams (i) and C. G. Moore (6) should be evenly matched as both are playing well at present. The club champion, Ekstedt, meets J M. Taylor, an eight-handicap man who can be dependeu upon to give of ins best. Taylor is a vory steady player whose game is remarkable for rue direction ho keeps and it is stated that ho has not been off the fairway for several seasons.

It has been decided .that the use of clubs so constructed is not in the best interests of the game, and accordingly from the date of tho communication such clubs will not bo permitted under the Rules of the Royal and Ancient Club.
