Fire Heroine
MRS. K. MILLER IN NEW ROLE. NEW YORK, Aug. 5. A lire occurred at a hotel at Fort Plain at which Mrs. Keith Miller, the auwoman, was staying. She helped to arouse the guests, all of whom escaped safely. The hotel was destroyed, the loss being £30,000. In a telephone conversation with Mrs. Miller at ■ Oneida, New York, where she went on a Chautauqua trip, it.was learned from her reluctant lips the courageous rolo she played in the hotel fire. She modestly asserted that she did little, but others told how, when smoko from an adjoining room poured into hers, she, in her night attire, went through the smoke and flame which filled the corridors, arousing other guests at the risk of her life. Many scrambled out of windows, down the 'fire escape, and on to the roof. Captain Lancaster, who came to hear her'lecture, and was staying overnight before flying to New York, was awakened by smoke on a lower floor, and escaped in his underclothes after vainly working the fire extinguishers, and helping other guests to safety. Mrs. Keith Miller and Captain Lancaster w'ere not hurt. The whole town considers her a heroine in averting loss of life by her quick wit and bravery.
