Transport for Relief Workers
IS PRIVILEGE ABUSED? “At five minutes to -I p.m, they were down tools, packed up and on the lorries, ready tor home,’’ said Cr. A. Campbell, chairman of the Oroua County Council, at its meeting yesterday rn the course of his remarks on a letter from the Prime Minister urging the co-operation of all local bodies in providing transport for unemployed to relief works. Cr. Campbell said that the Orua County would do all it could to assist t-iio situation and so far had not experienced aiiy difficulty in the matter of transport. However, it would appear to bo necessary to watch that the transport question did not give rise to abuse and he proceeded to . refer to what tic had seen on Monday last when relief workers were packed up to bo transported homo at 4 o’clock. “At that rate,’’ said Cr. Campbell, “the men were only doing about seven hours a day, and if that was so thcro might arise' complaints by county employees as to relief workers not working eight hours a day. Ho did not think that position obtained in the Oroua County. The county engineer: No —the men work the full time in the county. Cr. Campbell said that the council could only do its best to meet the situation.
