Chamber of Commerce And Transport Bill

CONDEMNATION OF PROVISIONS “DRASTIC”

The Transport Bill at present before Parliament was informally discussed by members of tho Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce at their .monthly meeting yesterday afternoon, following on the receipt of circular letters from the Associated Chambers of Commerce, in which considerable antagonism was expressed to certain features of the proposed legislation. Mr. S. A. Goldingham considered that the comment of the Associated Chambers was drastic and was not representative of the general feeling concerning the bill.Mr. L. H. Collinson said he was glad that apparently the transport companies were not objecting to the measure, v Too much power, said Mr. J. Wallace, would be put into the hands of the Minister of Transport. However, the bill would do much to stop the ruinous transport competition, and in that respect it was good. Palmerston North was vitally interested in rural transport, and it was imperative that nothing should be done to interfere with it. The president (Mr. M. H. Oram) pointed out that the council did not have the bill before it, and ho suggested that the secretary should procure a copy for consideration by a sub-com-mittee.

This was agreed to, the president and Messrs. Wallace, Goldingham and A. P. Stuart being appointed the sub-commit-tee.
