Heavy Storms Cause Many Deaths in France
DROUGHT IN PROVENCE FOLLOWED BY WIDESPREAD DESTRUCTION.
(Times Cable). PARIS, Aug. 10. Serious violent thunderstorms, which occurred throughout France during the week-end, caused great damage by floods, besides resulting in several deaths. Tho visitation culminated m a tornado at Toulon, following four months’ drought. Terrific wind blew a motor car from a street into a shop window. A hearse overturned, which was carrying a coffin. A boy cyclist was killed. Vineyards were flattened; roads were washed away and communications destroyed, preventing complete news of the havoc being transmitted. There was a heavy death-roll among pleasure boats and fishing vessels, which set off in a calm sea and with a blue sky, and which were overwhelmed by huge waves. Over fifty are missing. Thirteen bodies have been washed ashore.
There is great anxiety for yachts participating in the Marseilles-Corsica race, including two British vessels. A French torpedo boat is now making a search.
