Another Big Earthquake Somewhere
SEISMOGRAPHS EXTENDED TO LIMIT. United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. Received Tuesday, 9 p.m. SYDNEY, Aug. 11. The Sydney and Riverview Observatories to-day recorded an earthquake described as equal in intensity to the Japanese of September, i. 923. The Riverview authorities estimate the scene at nearly 7000 miles distant, possibly along the Pacific coast of America. The seismograph record began at 7.30 this mevning, indicating a severe disturbance. The second wave began at 8 to 8.30. At the Sydney Observatory the disturbance moved the instrument through the limit of its range. The tremors were more severe than Saturday’s and continued till eleven o’clock. Received Tuesday, Midnight. SYDNEY, Aug. 11. The Sydney Observatory expresses the opinion that the disturbance occurred over 11,000 miles from here, probably near the Azores or Cape Verde. It is regarded as possible that it was a purely submarine disturbance, but if near human habitation would involve a big loss of life. No foreign cables so far have been received on the subject.
