Manawatu County

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL The Manawatu County Council met at. Sanson- yesterday, Cr. W. E. Barber (chairman) presiding. There were also present Crs. J. McKelvic, J. Boyce, \\ E. Pearce, H. IL Hunt, D. W. Reid and J. 11. Perrett. Correspondence The following correspondence was dealt with: — From the Treasury, advising of the operation of the Local Authorities Loans (Rate of Interest) _ Act, which provides for a reduction of 1 per cent, in interest charges. —Received. From the Department of Lands and Survey, stating that the control of the Ferry reserve was vested in the council iu 1881, and that the department did not suggest any variation of the present arrangement made with the adjoining owner.—Received. Treasurer’s Report The treasurer reported on the county finances as follows; County fund account, dr. £9177 11/11; main highways loan account, cr. £ll3B 3/6; loan-ac-count, or. £1360 7/7; net debit balance, £0073 0/10. The amounts available for expenditure in the several ridings were reported as follows: Sandon, £152 7/5; Mt. Stewart, £173 13/0; Waitohi, £320 2/; Rongotea, £202 9/11; Carnarvon, £ll2 9/1; Kawa Kawa, £528 10/11; Awaliou, £199 15/7.The treasurer stated that a sum of over £IOOO was due to be received by the council on account of refunds from the Main Highways Board. Tramway Manager’s Report

Tin; tramway manager’s report on tire operations of tlio Sanson tramway was as follows: The chief items of traffic for July were: Grain, 15i tons; minerals and manure, 194 tons; general merchandise, 41 tons; cheese, 216 crates; eggs, 71 crates; cream, 10 cans; sheep, 13 trucks; metal, 30 trucks; hay, etc., 91 tons; posts, 2 trucks; timber, 1713 super, feet; cement, 12 tons. The accounts showed a debit balance of 179 10/9 for the month’s working.—Received. Rate Roll alterations The following alterations were made on the county rate roll: C. A. Natzae to Mrs. E. A. Natzkc, sections 357, Carnarvon township; G. H. Kingdon to R. Burgess, sections 4a, 2, 10 and 3c, Rangitikei Manawatu 0., block N.\, Kangitoto; G. Lent estate to T. J. Cook, lot 53, part section A, Sanson; E. Qumn to Mrs. H. H. Wood, lot 79, part section 384, Carnarvon; Manawaroa To Awe Awe to J. 11. Wilton and H. J. Mills, lot 3, section 3S7a, Carnarvon. Traffic Inspector’s Report The traffic inspector (Mr. W. Berry) reported that property owners were taking steps to clear the gorse growing adjacent to their properties. The results obtained by spraying blackberry and gorse with sodium chlorate had been successful. The handrails ol a bridge on the Bulls-Sanson road had been damaged by a car last Sunday evening. The driver had been located and an account for repairs amounting to £4 0/S had been forwarded to him.—Received. Engineer’s Report The county engineer (Mr. H. V. Bond) reported as follows: — “Main highways: Surface metal has been spread on Himatangi-banson, llimatangi-Eoxton (borough section), Ilimatangi-Rangiotu and Feilding-Awa-huri roads, and Stcivart’s line. Whirokino road is being repaired with a coat of sand and pit metal in weak places and at wash-outs. Foxton-Shaunon road is being metalled and corners have been cut back to improve vision. Drainage has been improved on Awahuri-Sanson road and slips have been removed on Mt, Stewart and on the Feilding-Awa-liuri road. All unsealed highways have been graded as usual. “Awahou riding; Road formation lias been carried out on No. (i line for a distance of approximately 45 chains and a 9in. concrete pipe culvert put m. Spring’s road has been re-shaped and drains have been cleaned out. A Din. concrete pipe culvert has also becu put in. On No. 2 line extension a small amount of repair work has been undertaken, but very little can be done at present, as this road runs along a sand ridge and is in a very exposed position and cannot be disturbed. Drains have been cleaned out on No. 1 line. The usual maintenance work has been undertaken on other roads. “Kawa Kawa riding: The usual maintenance work has been carried out, with the exception of metalling. It is anticipated that metal will now be available from the Oroua river. “Ronogtea riding: Drainage work has been completed on Green road, and the usual maintenance work has been progressing. Metalling will bo pushed ahead as soon as possible. “Carnarvon riding: Taylor’s and Soldiers’ roads have been cut out and graded, and maintenance of a general nature has bceu undertaken throughout. “Waitohi riding: A Din. concrete pipe culvert has been laid on Hammond’s lino and drains have been cut. Grading has been carried out. on several roads. “Mt. Stewart riding: Water tables are being widened and batters cut back on Rakchou road. As this work proceeds it is proposed to cut back corners and improve the roadline in general. A little metal is being spread on the Mt. Biggs-Mt. Stewart road. This work will bo expedited as metal becomes available. Other roads have been maintained.

“Sandon riding: Surface metal lias been.spread on Fagan’s, McDonnell’s, Richardson’s and Oliakea Terrace roads. Drains have been cut and others cleaned out on Fagan’s and Wilson’s roads. Two new culverts have been put in on Fagan’s line. Several roads have been graded. ’ ’ The report was received.
