An application from a settler for the remission of the 10 per cent, penalty on rates was before yesterday's meeting of the Manawatu County Council when it was decided that as the council had imposed the penalty it could not now remit it. Further, the penalty had been paid by a number of settlers ant if a remission was made in one case it would have to bo mado in all eases. The Manawatu County Council is at present employing approximately 100 men on unemployment works in tno county. Cr. W. D.
