Musical Reception

P.N. ARTISTS DELIGHT LARGE AUDIENCE.

The Manawatu branch of the Music Teachers’ Association was responsible for a very line effort last evening when a musical reception was held at the Eosco restaurant the proceeds from which will bo devoted to their fellow teachers, who have suffered as a result of the Hawke’s Bay earthquake, ike large room was filled to its capacity vvitn a most appreciative audience which was provided with a very delightful evening’s entertainment. Mr. J. Holmes Runnieles extended a warm welcome to the guests and in the name of the Dominion executive, expressed appreciation of the support accorded tho effort, and thanked those who wore contributing to the programme. The .programme was a veritable feast to music lovers and with tho city s singers, and most talented instrumentalists taking part the items could not fail to moot with the warmest approval. Owing to tho length of the programme encores could not be allowed but after Miss Naomi-WhaUey had given a most delightful rendering of “Life" (Curran) the audience was so insistent that an exception was made and Miss Wlialley came back to charm the audience with her singing of “Vespers” (Eraser Simpson). The City Choir, under the leadership of Mr. J. Holmes Runnieles, opened the programme with “The Vikings” and later contributed ‘ ‘ As Torrents in Summer” with good effect. Other items were as follow: Instrumental trio, “Norwegian Dance” (Brahms), Mrs. Fisher (violin), Miss Elvira Wycherley (’cello), Miss Muirkead (piano); song, “Vulcans Song” (Gounod), Mr. W. Watters; ’cello solo, “Gavotte” (Foppar), Miss I. Elliott; song, “A Russion Lament,” Mrs. McLachlan; violin solo, Third Movement “Symphony Espagnolo” (Lalo), Miss D. Southey-Baker; pianoforte solo, “Toccata” (Saint Saens), Miss Mavis Muirkead; song, “Ah, Was it He?” Mrs. Young; instrumental trio, “Andante and March" two movements of a suite by H. E. Gunter, Miss V. Gunter (violin), Miss D. Welton (’cello), Miss E. Gunter (piano); song, “My Heart is Weary” (Goring Thomas), Miss E. Gooding; instrumental trio, “Final Movement, Mendelssohn trio No. I,” Mrs. Law (violin), Miss G. McKenzie (’cello). Miss E. Woodfield (piano); pianoforte solo, “Shepherd’s Feunell” (Balfour Gardner), Miss E. Gunter; ’cello solo, “Apres un Revo” (Faure), Miss Elvira Wycherley; song, “Silent Moon,” Mr. Taplin; sketch, “Seven Women” (J. M. Barrie), Palmerston North Repertory Society, the parts being admirably read by Mrs. Bristow (Leonora), Miss Ashton (Mrs. Tovey), Mr. May Somerville (Captain Rattray), Mr.' J. F. Tasker (Mr. Tovey) and the stage directions by Mrs. May Somerville. The accompanistcs were Mrs. Grimshaw, Miss Dorothy Stevens and Miss Mavis Muirhead. There was a short interlude during which delicious refreshments were handed round. Lovely spring blooms, scarlet berries and ferns were everywhere in evidence and the general arrangements were in the capable hands of Mrs. Attwood and a willing band of assistants.
