CHAMBER OF COMMERCE Those present at the monthly meet* ing of the Foxton Chamber of Commerce were Messrs. J. K. Hornblow; (chairman), D. Christie, C. M. Hewett, B. N. Speirs, W. E. Bullard and F. H* Murray. Mr. F. J. Mantell wp.s elected a new member. The question of raising that portion of the main highway at Whirokino which is subject to flooding was discussed at some length. Mr. Hornblow referred to the loss of time and additional expense incurred by users of the road in being compelled to travel via Shannon, and expressed tho opinion that there would be no difficulty in raising the road between three and four feet, which would make it immune from flooding. He said there was no actual rush of water over the area affected, and culverts should be ablo tq cope with the water. Mr. D. Christie said that when the Levin-Marton railway deviation was under consideration some years ago the engineers had not considered the construction of a line over tho Whirokino would present any insurmountable difficulties. There was ample spoil available on the south side of the. Whirofkino bridge, and this could easily be Iconveyed across. Providing a deviation I was made to the higher ground to the eastward, the low-lying portion of the road would not be found to be of very great length. It was suggested that tho work should be carried out as an unemployment relief scheme, and that if necessary a deputation should wait upon the minister with that object in view. After tho matter ha'd been further 1 discussed it was decided to convene a public meeting to be held in Foxton at an early date, and to extend an invitation to th 9 various body representatives to be present.
