Following is a short review of the fields:—

The first, event is the Hunters’ Hurdles. Royal Mint appears to be well in with.io.9 for he ran consistently, at Wellington. King’s Counsel is the well-fancied Awapuni Candidate. Ho won the. Hunters’ Steeplechase the second day at the Awapuni winter fixture., Gueress, another from Awapuni, i 3 reported to be working -well at Eiccarton,' Fresh Breeze seems to have the bost credentials of the southerners engaged. The maiden-event'is over six furlongs and' there are some well bred maidens engaged. On Wellington form and track work at Riccarton, Belvoir, Actaeon and Pixie Gold read best, though there is a big chance of a surprise.

TRIAL HURDLE RACE HANDICAP, of 200 sovs.; If miles.

The Awapuni trainod Callamart has pride of place in the Trial Hurdles and after consistent Tunning at Wellington and at Awapuni must have a chance over the distance. Panther is reported to be well, also Aladdin. Harness has been schooling well and should have a show at the weight. Of the rest of the 9st. division Gourmet makes most appeal. Three that will not be neglected are Callamart, Eamesos and Gourmet.

JUMPERS’ FLAT RACE HANDICAP, of 200 sovs.; l?t miles.

Nukumai, at the head of the weights in the Jumpers’ Flat, is reported to be well. Llyn Dhu is another which appeals at the weights. Camisader has been going along' nicely' in work. Make Up (9.9) cannot be overlooked on recent form. Apache (9.9) was a winner at Te Awamutu, but has not done much since. Landmark and Membo make, most appeal of the others.. The favourite ' may be furnished by Llyn Dhii, Make Up, or Nukumai.

GRAND NATIONAL' STEEPLECHASE, of 1000 sovs.; about 3,} miles.

Wiltshire has done well over the Eiecarton country, winning the Steeples in 1928 and '29. The race he had in Wellington will havo done him good and he seems to have a royal chance of making it three. Omeo is nicely in. He was second to Dark Prince in the July Steeplechase at Trentham, conceding the winner 81bs., against the 31bs. to-day. Dark Prince, however, won at Trentham with a lot in hand. Paris, the Wellington Steeplechase winner, is nively in with 9.13 and will have to bo considered. He is a good jumper. Lucesg has been backed and beaten on several. occasions lately. Copey was third in the July Steeplechase at Trentham and his jumping was perfect The big fences at Riccarton may suit him. Of the other light-weights the best may be Bon Aryan, a double winner at Hawke’s Bay. The public may give most support to Omeo, Wiltshire and Dark Prince.

The Canterbury Jockey Club’s Grand National meeting opens at Riccarton to-day, The track should be in good order and .with big fields engaged the racing should be of an interesting nature .

The Winter Cup has attracted a good field. Palermo has pride of place with 10.8 and on fecont form' must bo given a shou'. Mahora won tho Whyte Memorial at Trentham, carrying 9.12, and should run prominently to-day. Royal Saxon started at Trentham, but was unplaced. Oharmeuse (10,3), winner of tho Great Easter, has been nicely treated and will have plenty of friends today. Ivahikatoa won the Members’ Handicap at Trentham (seven furlongs ) with 9.13, the time (1.39)) being particularly good in tho heavy going . Ho beat two good ones in l’rineo Val and Red Boa, both winners at the meeting. Great Star has not been harshly treated with 9.13. Of the rest of the light-weights Knollmore appears to have best credentials, the favourite may.be Knollmore, Channelise or Kahikatoa. ‘

THE AVONHEAD HANDICAP (Flat), of 200 sovs.; 7 furlongs.

Tlie first day’s programme will conclude with, the Avouhoad Handicap, which has attracted another big field. The Smuggler was disappointing at Trent ham, but the going may not have suited him.. Juniper and Shatter are reported to be working well. Paki,ere is well in with 9.2. Tippling, Q*inopal .and Hounslow are reported to bo well. The Sun won the Croi'ton Handicap at Trcntham, covering the seven furlongs in 1.38. .Of the others Water Power and Air Laddie appear to stand out.
