National Market

DOMINATION OF BEEF ENTRY BY NORTH ISLAND BREEDERS.

The National market at Addington is recognised as a converging point for the best fat stock of the beef-rais-ing districts of New Zealand. Last week’s event was no exception particularly in regard to fat cattle. The feature at this year's National was the domination of the beef entry by North Island fatteners. For some years the entries from this Island have been increasing but last week they numbered practically half —260 in a total of 563 —and, measured by weight, the northern consignments substantially exceeded the 50 per cent, proportion, ns there were some especially prime lines and individual big bodies forward. The top price was £sl, for a massive, evenly-fleshed Abcrdeen-Angus bullock, with a lengthy show ring record, from the Dannevirke district and there was a lively duel between two Christchurch butchers for the beast which, eventually, was knocked down at the figure stated. The bullock would probably dress a good 16001 b. Last season the top prico was £44 and in 1029 £sl. The cattle entry wa s similar in size to that of twelve months ago —563 compared with 550. However, there were more prime cattle this year, the increased average weight being quite substantial. For the show entries commercial values were substantially exceeded in many cases, the top price bullock realising quite £3 per 1001 b., and some of the others over 40s. Some of the special lines sold as follows: — J. Holden (Dannevirke), 1 AbcrdeenAngus bullock at £sl, 1 at £37, 1 at £23 7s 6d, 2 at £2O, and 1 at £lB 17s 6d —a magnificent line, averaging £2B 6s. G. F. Moore (Wanganui), 1 Hereford bullock at £36 (one of the features of the market), and 1 at £2O ss. T. A. Duncan (Rongotca), 15 Shorthorn bullocks and 6 Shorthorn steers at £l2 17s Gd to £lB 2s 6d--average £ls 11s 6d. B. K. Thompson (Kairanga), 27 Abcrdeen-Angus bullocks at £l2 12s 6d to £l4 7s 6d—average £l3 16s 9d.
