Sequel to Sensational Jewel Robbery
DUNEDIN, Aug. IU. The sensational jewel robbery from Dawson and Company’s premises in January, for which a man named Wilson was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment in June, came forward again in the Polico Court this morning, when his mate, William Newton alias Sullivan, alias Burke, who was arrested at Christchurch, pleaded guilty to breaking and entering the shop and stealing £3OOO worth of jewellery. The police evidence showed that Newton made a statement when brought here, which admitted the robbery. 'On tho Sunday night following the Saturday burglary, Newton went to Christchurch, and Wilson went to Melbourne by tho Mahcno. Wilson got £Vt> in Melbourne for his share, Mcwton receiving £lO from this on Wilson's return. Newton’s share of the robbery was 79 rings, which he sold indiscriminately to peoplo as bankrupt stock from Napier. Thirty of these he said were beyond recovery, but. ho had supplied information that might lead to the recovery of the remaining 49. Accused was committed for sentence.
