A bride ’s veil is a survival of a very ancient custom. In the days of the Greeks and Eomans bridos wore a red veil during the marriage ceremony. This was done to signify tlio bride’s modesty. The veil then, completely covered the bride. The origin of tho custom was believed to be in the very days when men .won their wives by forceful capture. The men were said to throw a large sheet round the woman of choice so as to render it more difficult for her to struggle. In some African tribes this method of marriage is still practised, and the sheet is used in making tho capture.

Trained women are now holding responsible and well-paid posts in Britain, as head gardeners at schools and institutions, as well as on large and small private estates. This work offers scope to suitable girls who can obtain the necessary training and practical experience.
