STANLEY T WINS STEWARDS’ HANDICAP.

CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 8. The National week opened with the Metropolitan trots at Addington. The weather was Hue, tho track good and the attendance large. The Racing Described.

lu the Introductory Handicap, Hemlight -joined Repute in tho lead halt a mile irom home, with Lady lan, Boneta and Nelson Boy following. Hemlight took charge at tho entrance to tlio straight and won easily by live lengths from Boncta, with Repute, who was urine, third. Priceless was always prominent, in the Advance Handicap. Bracken moved up at the entrance to tho straight and in a good linish priceless beat Bracken by a neck, with Herod a neck away, and Aristotle four lengths further back. In the August Handicap, Erin's Fortune broke at the start. Regal Voyage took charge, leading Nceoro round tho homo turn, with Pluto and Ulenrossie next. Regal Voyage had a lead of several lengths at the entrance to the straight, and though Ulenrossie iinished fast, Regal Voyage beat him comfortably by a length and a half. Neeoro was third, three lengths away, with Duridas Boy four lengths further buck. John Jinks took the lead two furlongs from home in tho Trial Handicap, but Ayrmont Chimes wore him down in the straight and won by two lengths, Nctta Oro iitiishing strongly five lengths away and beating Black Liou by over a length for third place. In the Stc'wards’ Handicap, along the back Stanley T took charge, Sir Voyage and Quickfiro following. Stanley* T led into the straight and stalled off a challenge from Quickfiro by half a length. Sir Voyage was a length away, with Engagement a poor fourth, In. the Queen Mary Handicap, Satin King and Meteor led Warplane and Dillon Dogan into the straight. Warplano

linished strongly on the outside and beat Meteor by half a length. Dillon Logan was half a length away. Warplane started 24 yards behind. Sodium took chargo 50 yards from tho post in the Selwyn Handicap and stalled off a late run by Steel Ail to win by a head. An easterly wind made conditions unpleasant for the largo crowd of spectators. Outside the course proper was

open, while sonic schooling was done by hurdlers and steeplechasers in the centre of the course. A lot of useful work was accomplished. Kakara did seven furlongs in 1.31 2-5, while Riri Hoa covered six furlongs in 1.15 1-5, finishing well. Lady Pam beat Spearful over six furlongs in 1.20. Mcprisant ran seven furlongs in 1.29 3- the last half inile in 51sec. A light weight was carried, but it was a good gallop. Lancer and Huntley were companions over a mile in 1.47 3-5. Irish Chieftain and Chief Light sprinted half a mile in 50 l-ssec. Shatter gave Paquito a start and liuishod with him after six furlongs in 1.15 2-5. Cricket Bat beat Babel comfortably over six furlongs in I.IS 1-5. Pixie Gold sprinted half a mile in 49 4-sscc, a very smart effort. Thurina and Storm Raid worked together over seven furlongs in 1.30. Eamo, Solwit and Manctho in that order did live furlongs in 1.4. Gay Crest and Limited did six furlongs in 1.19 1-5. Omco, Orillamb and Night Club set off for a round of the schooling fences. Night Club fell at the first fence, and Omeo showed to more advantage than Orillamb over the balance of tho circuit. They afterwards galloped a mile in 1.51. Bclvoir had Antrim Bird for a mate over half a mile in 51 l-ssec. Bclvoir was going well at the end. Palace, Night Guard, Aclacon ..and Water Polo were lu that order at the end of six furlongs in 1.3 2-5, a smart gallop, but, Palace was receiving a lot of weight from tho others. Nukumai gave a smart display, jumping four hurdles. Gustavo and Hounslow did five furlongs in 1.5 2-5, Rascal and Starshuotcr were going well throughout a six-furlong gallop m 1.18 1-5. Sieipncr sprinted half a mile in 50 4- iinishing well. Sharp Thorn broke away in front oi Royal Love, and tho pair iinished to-

gether over seven furlongs, Royal Lovo registering 1.32. Nino or Spades and Captain’s Gilt jumped four hurdles smartly. lvupuua led Night Club over a circuit of the steeplechase schooling fences but was not sent along fast. Mcmbo and Overhaul were associated over four hurdles, both jumping well at a solid pace. Eclair and 'lres Sec did seven furlongs in 1.32 3-5. Dunraven was going better than Jason’s Quest at the end of six furlongs in 1.18. Abcrleldy was given a working gallop over a mile. Channelise, receiving the weight, was i a length in front of KnolJmero over , seven furlongs in 1.30 1-5. Red Heckle and Jolly Beggar sprinted half a mile up the back. : Red Boa drew out from Royal Saxon to iinish a mile run in 1.45. The Quorn and Desert Song occupied l 1.20 3-5 over six furlongs.

Compris got out iu front of Kossferry and Invictus, and led all the way over live furlongs in 1.3 1-5. Callamart and Gallivautcr gave a good display over four hurdles, Ramoses following over the first two, and then pulling up. Llyu Du, Make Up, and Gucress jumped six hurdles, the first-named pair being together all tho way, and giving a capital exhibition, finishing several lengths in front of Gucress, who also jumped well. Wiltshire, Paris, Wako King and Luecss were among the Grand National candidates who got through useful work

on the flat. Noteworthy sprinted half a mile in olsoc, and did it well. On Top, Martian Prince and Kanelagh finished as named at the end of six furlongs in 1.20 3-5. On Top was an easy winner. An attempt was made to get Panther to jump the hurdles, but he declined. Ringing Cheer beat Juniper very easily over live furlongs on No. 7 grass in 1.4 1-5. Mount Boa was going better than Night Maid at any stage of six furlongs, done iu 1.19 1-5. Prince Lu finished ahead of Elude and Quantum at the business end of six furlongs in 1.18 1-5. Ho was always going well. While doing trotting exercise ou the track in the middle of the course, Mahora, ridden by his trainer, bolted. He was not pulled up until he had gone three times round, when he cooled off. After his escapade there was nothing wrong with him. Bon Aryan and Dark Prince led from King's Counsel, dopey and Pangolin in a schooling gallop once round over the fences on tbo course proper. The pace was not fast, and all jumped well unti* the last fence at Cutts’s. Hero Bou Aryan pecked badly owing to landing short, and nearly lost his rider. Copey also made a bad jump, but recovered well. King's Counsel did the usual, for he fell. His rider, A. M‘Donald, wasnot hurt. Great Star, carrying 9.0, ran seven furlongs in 1.31 3-5, and did it well. Rational 1L and Panther, who were carrying fair weights, pleased by galloping a mile together in 1.44 3-5, the first half clone iu Slscc. Cossack Chief and Paris were under a pull while running seven furlongs in 1.35. Wiltshire and Luccss were tho last to work. They wero given a working gallop over a mile, and completed their task in 1.56 4-5. Luccss was soro iA the start, but moved freely enough as he went along.
