Miners and the Tribute System
BLACKBALL WORKING TWO SHIFTS Per Press Association. GREYMOUTH, Last Night. Tho Blackball Coal Company are now working two shifts daily, employing 40 miners, including unionists. This is additional to the Blackball Creek Company “tribute” concern. It is rumoured that several miners now on strike will apply for work at tho Blackball Coal Company this week. One hundred and fifty-one miners, members of the Grey Valley were proceeded against to-day by tho Labour Department, charged with taking part in an alleged strike on Juno 17th, at Wallschd. The proceedings taken previously against tho union wero dismissed and are now taken against tho men individually. Tho trouble aroso over the employment of a surveyor in the mine who had also worked in the Briandale tribute ruiue. The ease is proceeding.
