Wheat and Flour Duties

At a largely-attended meeting or residents ox iuo uorough convened uy tne Borougu Council tne lollowing icsolution teas carried unanimously: ‘’This meeting of ratepayers aud residents of Ashburton borougii enqinatically protests against t-lic revision of the sliding scale ox wheat, and hour duties as suggested in the Budget. We are strongly of opinion that tho scale should ue amended to the basis of guaranteeing growers 4s 9d a bushel net on trucks at country stations, sacks extra, Tuscan March-Aprii delivery.” It was docided to send copies of the resolution to the Prime Minister and every member of Parliament. A largo mooting of Methven farmers passed a resolution requesting that tho Government grant immediate relief from land tax, especially the 1929 amendments, otherwise many farmers and pastoralists will be compelled to leave their farms. A further resolution was that failing Government action tho assistance of the Dominion executive of the Farmers’ Union and Sheepowners’ Federation be obtained in initiating a campaign to persuade Parliament and the country generally that unless somo measure of relief is afforded to the farming community tho primary industries must inevitably fail, bringing about the downfall of the Dominion. Another resolution affirmed that tho proposed wheat and flour duties would force the price below 4s 6d as promised by the Premier, and suggests that the reduction be 38s and the Government take steps to assure a reduction in the price of bread.
