Did You Know That
If a valve is badly pitted, it is best to have it trued up at a competent garage? . ... A drop of oil at the joints in the gear control often makes a vast difference to the ease of operation? When a valve is ground in, both the seat and face wear away slightly, so the tappet clearance must be checked afterwards? • . Magneto chains should bo inspected occasionally and, if necessary, adjusted, for anv slackness will mean retarded ignition? With the majority of machines the adjustment of the gear control should bo checked every time the primary chain is taken up? A small, stiff brush and paraffin and benzole mixture are excellent for cleaning the inaccessible nooks and crannies on engine and gearbox? Ail emergency tyre gaiter can be cut from a short length of an old pedal cycle cover, the length being sufficiently long to tuck in under the beads? When an engine makes a habit of kicking back on being kick-started, in spite of the control being retarded, the contact breaker cam ring should be suspected? Probably it is not operating freely. It is most important to see that no grinding paste is left behind after grinding in? Wash it away with paraffin, so that there is no chance of specks scoring the cylinder. An adjustment should never be left until “to-morrow”? When a part is out of adjustment it invariably wears quickly; forks, chains and wheel bearings aro eases in point. The handle of an adjustable spanner should bo turned in the direction of the open end of the jaws? If it is used the other way the jaws are likely to become strained. Similarly, with a set spanner that has the jaws at an angle to the shank, there is both a correct and incorrect way. In cases where tlie compression is being lowered it is desirable to use one thick compression plate rather than two or three thin ones? The reason for this is that the thin plates will tend to bulge where they arc not under direct pressure from the cylinder base nuts, and may cause the cylinder flange to crack.
