Family Record Spoiled
SAD CASE OF THEFT. Sentence of nine months’ imprisonment. in the second division was passed by Mr Justice MacKinnon at Chester lately on Lionel John Vaughan, aged forty-five, Post, Office overseer, committed from Crewe, who pleaded guilty to two charges of stealing registered packets and one of opening a registered packet. Prosecuting counsel stated that Vaughan borrowed £IOO in 1026 from another postal worker to finance a theatrical company. His father-in-law was a manager at Crewe, and he became involved in the theatrical business. Mr Duncan Boss, clerk from the secretary’s office, G.P.0., stated that Vaughan came of a family that had been engaged in Post Office service fo? a long time, his father having- been superintendent at Crewe. The family had a record of 150 years’- service with tho Post Office. The judgo remarked that Vaughan had brought a worse punishment upon himself by disgracing a family which had a long and honourable record in the Post Office. •
