How They Ran

Royal Acre the Hurdles All started in the Hurdles. Full Mark (£363 .10/-) was installed a warm favourite, with Kopje (£203 10/-) and Royal Acre (£197 10/-) next in demand. The race needs little description. Royal Acre stayed in behind the leaders until three furlongs from home, when he was sent to the front and, leading into the straight, went on to win by half a length from Full Mark, with Arch Eagle a similar distance away, third. Goldlike was badly left when the barrier went up, Goblin Market being first to show out. AVhen the field had settled down, however, Kopje was acting as pacemaker, with Goblin Market and Hymgreat as his nearest attendants. Passing the stand the first time, Goldlike had been rushed up and was with Kopje as they approached the hurdle. Kopje rapped the fence hard and came down, his rider being thrown hard against a post. Goldlike showed the way out of the straight from Royal Acre, Arch Eagle and Latakia, and there was no alteration into the back, the field being bunched. Arch Eagle was in front crossing the top, but Royal Acre out-jumped him at the fence and turned for home first, just in front of Arch Eagle and Full Mark. Once over the last hurdle Royal Acre had to be ridden out to hold off Full Mark, the margin between them being only half a length. Arch Eagle was a similar distance away, third, and then there was a gap to Spearopa and Latakia. Goblin Market broke down •and was pulled up.

Golden Shadow Wins Easily Knollmorc was withdrawn from the Ongo Hack Handicap, leaving a field of eight. The public went for Glenrossic (£696 10/-), AVallaruh (£322 10/-) and Leisure (£253), but the dividends were returned by the Dannevirke and AVoodvillo candidates, Golden Shadow and Arajean. The field went away in lino and, after they had gone the best part of a furlong and a half, Moatoa and Leisure went to the front and led across the top from Navaho, Golden Shadow and Wallaruh. Approaching the home turn Goldzone made a forward move and was in behind Leisure and Navaho as they straightened out, being closely followed by Golden Shadow, Arajean and Glenrossic. In the run to the judge Golden Shadow went past the others and won going away by a good two lengths from Arajean, which was only half a head in front of Leisure. AVallaruh, Goldzone and Navaho went past in line, not more than half a length behind the third house.

Good Finish in Manchester All started in the Manchester Handicap, which was won by Chopin by a narrow margin from the little-fancied Calamine, with Moutoa Treasury close up, third. Pahu (£5lO 10/-) was installed favourite, the next best backed being High Faintin’ (£389) and Moutoa Treasury (£2IS 10/-). The winner was sixth favourite, and Calamine was tenth in the betting order. A good start w r as effected and the early leader was Monalof from Chopin, Mountain Heath, Pahu, Mount Shannon, Paitonu and High Falutin’. Going along the back Monalof was still in front, with Kahikatoa, Mountain Heath, Pahu, Chopin, High Falutin’ and Paitonu following in that order. Approaching the turn Moutoa' Treasury made a forward move, and across the top was in third place behind Monalof and Kahikatoa. There was no ' alteration into the straight, and Monalof, Kahikatoa and Moutoa Treasury turned for home

ahead of Mountain Heath, Chopin, Paitonu and High Falutin’. Calamine was well back. In the run home Moutoa Treasury was first to show out, but Chopin quickly challenged and took tho lead. A hundred yards from the post Calamine joined issue and looked as if she would pull it off. Chopin, however, responded to every call and went past with half a length to spare from Calamine, Moutoa Treasury being a short head away, third, followed by Paitouu, Ivahikatoa and Paliu. Dead Heat in the Maiden

There was a great iinish in the maiden event, tho judge being unable to separate the first two horses, Nimble and Thrasher. Lord Merriwee, Priscilla Verne and Infusion were scratched. There was most support for Thrasher (£438), Black Duchess (£350) and the Nimble-Chief Line bracket (£336 10/-). A good start was effected, and when the field had settled down Nimble was showing the way to Thrasher, Black Duchess, White Squall and Thermopylae. Nimble was still in | the van crossing the top and showed l the way into the straight from Thrasher, White Squall, Black Duchess and I Swiftray. In the run to the post Nimble and Thrasher went away from the others, but Swiftray made a late run and got to within half a length of them at the finish. White Squall was fourth, and Black Duchess was the next to finish.

Stewards Hold Inquiry and Place Thrasher Second

After the race the judicial committee held an inquiry into alleged interference by Thrasher with Nimble and, after hearing tho evidence, gave the race to Nimble, Thrasher being placed second. Easy for Maliora Tho Taonui Hack Handicap was the best of good things for Maliora, and Mr. Plummer’s gelding won easily by two lengths, Nightmare and Blacksmith filling the places. Mahora (£515) was a good favourite, Nightmare (£280) and The Warden (£279 10/-) being next in demand. Park Acre was the early leader from Nightmare, Mahora, Tentcall and Miss Shef. Crossing the top Miss Shef was in the van, closely attended by Park Acre, Blacksmith, Mahora, Nightmare, Tentcall and Easterly, Bon Eve bringing up the rear. There was little alteration into the straight, though Mahora had moved up into third place behind Miss Shef and Blacksmith. Once in line for the judge Mahora had no difficulty in settling the opposition and went over the lino with the best part of two lengths to spare from Nightmare, which was over three lengths ahead of Blacksmith. Tentcall was fourth, followed by Miss Shef and Bon Eve. Orapai Beats Aston on tiie Post Consent (£919 10/-) was a warm favourite for the open sprint, with Just an Idea and Royal Routine next in demand. The race was won by Orapai, which got up in the last stride to head Aston on the post. Royal Routine was first to show out from the barrier, with Aston, Consent and Orapai in close attendance, followed by Sight Draft, Just an Idea and Richfield in that order. Crossing tho top Royal Routine and Aston were together in front two lengths clear of Orapai, with Consent and Just an Idea next. Aston was first to straighten out for home, and at the distance looked like a winner. Orapai finished well, however, and got him just short of the post. There was a gap of three lengths to Richfield, and then came Sight Draft, Royal Routine, Consent and Just an Idea. Grand Jury at Long Last

Lordlike was withdrawn from the Onepuhi Hack Handicap. Grand Jury was sent out favourite, carrying £194 more than Little Doubt, which was entrusted with a shade more support than Arrowhead and Laconic. Jadarino and Laconic led out of the straight the first time from Spearful, Arrowhead, Warzone and Grand Jury. Along the back the first division comprised Jadarino, Arrowhead, Laconic, Grand Jury and Warzone. Arrowhead and Laconic were in front from the favourite crossing the top, but as they turned into the straight Laconic, Grand Jury and Warzone were in line ahead of Spearful and Little Doubt. Grand Jury and Laconic had the finish to themselves and Grand Jury was under punishment over the final bit, staying on well to beat Laconic by half a length. Warzone was three lengths away, third. Little Doubt was fourth, and then finished Arrowhead, Spearforni and Jadarino. Fitz Quex Shows His Mettle

The final event was well won by the Woodville-trained Fitz Quex, which, fourth in the betting order, began well and, attending the leaders to the straight, went to the front at the distance and won going away by three lengths. Cashier was favourite, with Paratoo and Gold Dawn next in demand. Fitz Quex was first out from Gold Cure, Cashier, Paratoo, Juggle, Limosin, Kory Mor, Gold Dawn and Glcnstar. At the half mile Gold Cure had charge from a bunched field, Fitz Quex and Glcnstar being together next, in front of Paratoo. The leaders going across the top were Gold Cure, Fitz Quex, Cashier and Paratoo, and these were the first to turn for home. At the distance Fitz Quex went to the front and won easily by three lengths from Paratoo, which was a head in front of Cashier. Gold Cure was fourth and then came Rory Mor, Juggle, Gold Dawn and Glcnstar. Limosin broke down three furlongs from home.
