Manawatu Racing Club's Autumn Meeting

PROFITS TO GO TO EARTHQUAKE RELIEF FUND A meeting of the executive of tile Manawatu Racing Club was held last evening to discuss the necessary arrangements for the meeting, to be held on March 21 and 23, and it was decided to make application to tho Government to hold the meeting as a relief meeting. If the application is granted all profits will go to the earthquake relief fund.

FEILDING JOCKEY CLUB GIFT The Feilding Jockey Club, at its meeting oil Wednesday evening, voted £SO towards the Hawke’s Bay earthquake relief fund.

The Southern 'Quake ORIGIN WAS NOT IN HAWKE’S BAY AREA. The earthquake which was felt in Christchurch at 11.48 Monday .evening had its origin approximately 175 miles distant, according to the scismographie record taken at tho Christchurch Magnetic Observatory. The ’quake lasted thirty seconds, and came from tho north. It did not come from tho Kawkcs’ Bay area. Although the shock was not sovcrc in the city, it was moro noticeable in the suburbs, and many people were aroused from their sleep. Ashburton, Rangiora, Rakaia, Greymouth, Westport, Nelson, Blenheim, Timaru and Wellington also felt the shock, but no damage was reported.

Kiwitea County Sympathy Before tho commencement of tho ordinary business at Wednesday’s meeting of the Kiwitea County Council, tho chairman (Cr. L. T. McLean) referred to the Hawke’s Bay earthquake, briefly mentioning the tragic loss of life which the disaster had brought about. Tho following resolution, which was seconded by Cr. F. 0. Stack, was then carried in silence: “That this council, representing the ratepayers and residents of the County of Kiwitea, extends its deep sympathy to all those who have boon affected by tho recent disastrous earthquake in the Hawke’s Bay district, which resulted in a tremendous loss of life and property; and further, that tho Council donates £SO to tho earthquake fund and that a subscription list be opened at the county office.”
