Schools Recommence After Summer Vacation

OPENING DAY ENROLMENTS . i The primary schools in the Wanganui Education Board’s district recommenced yesterday after tho summer vacation. Central School. At tho Central school 87 pupils were admitted to bring the roll for the opening day to 828, compared with 820 foi last year. During last year 337 pupils were admitted and 334 were withdrawn. In commenting on the pupils admitted the headmastor, Mr Bary, remarked that they included representatives from schools in all parts of both islands. Mr B. B. Tier took up an appointment, as probationary assistant, Miss V. A. F. Cl.apham probationary assistant, and Miss M. T. A’Court probationer. Terrace End. Tho headmaster at Terrace End, Mr. A. W. Thompson, anticipated a fall in the roll this year. Last year tho roll numbered 700, there being 90 withdrawals when school resumed yesterday morning, while 40 new pupils were admitted to bring the roll number to 650.. Misses P. M. Hastings and M. Hill commenced duty as probationary assistants aud Miss A. R. Tottman and Mr. J. S. Valentine as probationers. Russell Street. Mr F. C. Campbell, headmaster of Russell street, reported that tho roll on the opening day was 206. There were 15 withdrawals from tho school and 21 pupils admitted, the increase being six. Mr. D. Biel and Miss Joan Sheppard commenced their duties as probationary assistants. West End. The West End school commenced the new year yesterday morning, but, judging by tbo attendance, all the parents were not aware of the fact. The headmaster, Mr. W. H. Jackson, said that several people were under the impression that the school would not commence until to-day. In comparison with a roll number of 343 last year, only 290 pupils enrolled when the school opened yesterday'. The average attendance last year was 338.8 and for thy third term 357. Although there was a nominal roll of 31 pupils for Standard 6, only 28 took their places'. Mr. Jackson expects tho roll to reach normal today. Hokowliitu School. Mr. L. J. Plank, headmaster at Hokowhitu, did not anticipate any change in the roll. At the end of last year the roll was 370, 30 pupils had been withdrawn and 24 admitted. Miss Z. Heatley had been appointed substitute assistant at Hokowhitu and Mr A. C. Cutler probationer. College Street. No material alteration is anticipated in the attendance roll at the College street school this y r car. Although the removal of the All Saints’ Children’s Homo to Pascal street has resulted in a number of children being withdrawn, there have already been 38 new admissions which will make the roll at the opening practically tho same as last year.
