ELIMINATING ROUNDS OF AMATEUR CHAMPS.

Manawatu Association Tourney

SOME SPLENDID BOUTS

The eliminating rounds of the Mans watu boxing championships were got off last evening at Havill’s gymnasium in the presence of a largo crowd of on. thusiasts. The entries received by the association were satisfactory, but at the last moment word camo to hand that three of tho Pahiatua boys would not be able to compete, Holdom having gone into hospital with appendicitis, and Oxley and Davis having contracted influenza.

The officials were: Messrs. Earle It. Winrsett (president), M. O’Brien (referee), B. McGrath and J. Louissou (judges), J. M. Pearson (announcer), A, E. Ekstedt (timekeeper), H. Berrimnn and J. Smith (seconds) and J. Evans (secretary). , A Sensational Fight. Tho middle-weight contest between W. Jacobs (Rongotea) 11.4, and W. Colton (P.N.) 11.3 was won by Jacobs after a most sensational fight. At the gong Jacobs started to pile up the points with his left, but half-way throughout the round Colton bowled Jacobs over with a right swing flush to tho point. To all intents and purposes the fight was over, but Jacobs was up at nino and to everyone’s surprise, took the fight to Colton and battering him all over the ring had him in a bad way at the gong. The second round was easily Jacobs’ and although Colton connected with some heavy rights, Jacobs had him out on his feet when tho third man stopped tho fight and awarded it to Jacobs. Light-heavy-weight Final.' J. Cossill (P.N.), 11.10 easily beat L. McKay (P.N.) 12.0 in the final of tho light-heavy-weight class. Cossdl had the fight all his own way and early in the first round sent McKay through the ropes with a loft to the jaw. In the second round ho had McKay dows for eight. McKay rallied and although ho had absorbed a lot of punishment, ho was still on his feet at the final geng. Bantam-weight Final. L. McLaughlin (Awapuni Boxing Club) S.O and E. Innes (Rongotea) 8.2 met in the final of tho bantam-weights The first round was good. Innes had the better of the earlier exchanges, McLaughlin seeming a bit nervous. Innes connected with some good lefts, but McLaughlin'tbcn started to mix it and very nearly even the tall}'. The second was a wonderful round with both boys lighting all tho way. Innes concentrated on the body, but McLaughlin was making effective use of a left jab to the face. Both were very tired at the bell. The third saw both boys light themselves to a standstill and the verdict, a popular one, went to the stronger boy, Innes, by a narrow margin. The boys were accorded an ovation as they left the Ting. Unpopular Decision. A. Candy (P.N.) 10.7 got a decision over J. Beach (Pahiatua) 10.4 in the final of the welter-weight championship and the decision met with a very mixed reception. Candy certainly did most of the leading, but was fighting wildly. Beach, on the other hand, was very cool and taking Candy’s swings on the gloves, scored with right crosses and left hooks to the face. There was a good deal of in-fighting in tho first round which ended about even. Candy took the light to Beach in the second tut the Pahiatua boy kept out of trouble and crossed a right to the head and then back-moved another swirig and a heavy right flush to tho mouth. It was Beach’s round by a good margin. Candy connected with several to the face at the opening of the final round, but Beach retaliated with heavy rights. Candy tried hard over tho final

stages, but Beach was beating him to the punch. Exhibition Bouts. In addition to the championship events, there w r ere several exhibition bouts. Two promising boys, W. Broughton (Awapuni) (1.13, a candidate for championship honours, and D. Annesley (Awapuni) 7.9, fought three very willing rounds ami thcro was not much between them at the finish. * T. Holden (8.13) and F. O’Styke (9.0), two JPahiatua boys, also fought as if their lives depended upon it and greatly pleased tho spectators. The final bout was between Tiger Richards (10.0) and H. Donaldson (9.8), both of Palmerston North, But this was not taken very seriously. SARRON v. LECKIE. AT OPERA HOUSE TO-NIGHT. Everything is in readiness for tho fight between Pete Sarron (America) and Johnnie Leckio (Napier) to take place at the Opera House tomight. Both men axe reported to be in tho pink of condition and a great contest is forecasted. Leckie got the verdict on points over Sarron in their first encounter, but Barron has beaten Leckio three times since. Barron lost each time to Donovan, but Leckie beat tho Waitara fireman by the short routo in their only meeting. Whichever way the fight goes to-night, it will be well worth seeing. The preliminaries to the big contest will be interesting also, being the finals of the amateur championships*
