A Curious Custom
A carious custom prevailed in Hiania, one of the little islands of tlic_ Greek Archipelago. The girls of this tiny island exercised tho right to propose to men! The inhabitants of Himia are engaged mostly in sponge fishing. When a girl desired to marry she waited until she had obtained the numbei of sponges from tho sea that corresponded with the number of years she had lived. These she placed in a silk net, which she presented to the man of her choice. Should ho refuse, his chances of obtaining another bride were remote, as usually the Hinnian maidens shunned him as a punishment.
