Manawatu Women's Club
A group discussion was held on Thursday at the Manawatu Women’s Club. There were about 80 guests and members present, who divided into sections of eight, each group having a loader. Questions under discussion were: Should husbands got breakfast on Sunday mornings and if so, why; and that all-absorbing controversy so much before the citizens of Palmerston North: “Should tho trees in the town area be removed for the convenience of motorists and if so, Why?’’ The leader at each table was called upon to road the views of her own group. Question number one was heartily attacked, and it was the opinion of tho majority, that husbands should not get breakfast. Question number two gave food for reflection and after a lively discussion, votes were equal. Many opinions wero voiced on this subject, half stating that. the town area should not be used as a parking place for cars. They declared that the Borough Council should see to it that motorists did not park in tho immediate vicinity of tho town and that the trees should be loft; others thought tho council should spend more money in lighting the town, so that there would be no danger of accidents where trees were concerned. One lady thought the citizens should do as they did in London—walk round the trees and use every power they possessed to protect them.
Musical items were rendered by Mesdames F. MeLaclilan (songs), and George Petersen (recitations). Miss Eileen Woodfield was the accompanist. Apologies were received from Mesdames Mounscy, Tyerman, Fairbrother and Sinclair. Visitors welcoihed rvero Mrs. Alex Clark, Mrs. Shelton and Miss Shelton. Votes of thanks were accorded the performers. The hostesses were Mcsdames Royal, Reid and W. F. Carter. At the conclusion of tho afternoon, the chairwoman (Mrs. Aitchison) asked those present to decide whether they were in favour of a card afternoon being hold, in order to raise funds for the yearly hamper for Porirua. It was unanimously agreed to hold a card afternoon on May C, members present to make up tables, and b,o at Messrs Collinson and Cunninghamo’s Ltd. at 2.30 punctually.
