MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The Oroua County Council met at Feilding yesterday, Councillor MeElroy presiding in the absence of the chairman, Councillor A. Campbell. Also present were Councillors T. Green, W. McLennan, W. Green-how, and A. V. Shannon. Leave of absence was granted Dr. A. Campbell. Correspondence. ■ The following correspondence was dealt with: —

Main Highways Board, forwarding £1,408 3s lOd being refund on maintenance on highways.—Received. Main Highways Board, forwarding financial authorities for balance of sealing work, having to do with the Taonui—Bunnybhorpe road and from Ashhurst to the Gorge.—Received.

Main Highways Board agreeing to Messrs. Isherwood, Bellam and Co., proceeding with sealing work on Grcat-ford-Woodville highway.—Received. Main Highways Board stating that all claims for refund of maintenonce of highways made by March 14 would be paid before the end of the financial year.—Received. Bank of New Zealand, stating that rate of interest on overdrafts had been raised to 7 per cent. —Received. Kairanga County Council, forwarding statement of heavy traffic licenses collected for quarter ending December 31, 1929, together with £9O Ss 8d being council's share of the fees. —Received. Woodville Jockey Club, asking council to obviate as far as possible the congestion of traffic at upper Gorge bridge.—Left to the chairman and county engineer to attend to. Government Insurance Department, forwarding for completion agreement In connection with accident to C. Doreen. —Received. From the Manawatu Automobile Association, asking whether the recently

tar-sealed portion of the Napier road (Palmerston North to Ashhurst) was perinanent.—Resolved to intimate that the work had only just commenced and that, it was obvious that the sealing had not been completed. Treasurer’s Report. Total rates levied, £14,749 15s 4d, collected to date, £14,154 12s sd; outstanding, £595 2s lid. General rates outstanding (four years), on March 31, 1929, £1,137 8s 6d; collected, £G3 7s 2d; outstanding, £1074 Is 4d.

Riding Accounts.—Expenditure on maintenance Western riding, £llll 8s 9d; Eastern riding, £1684 15s lOd.

Bank Balances.—General account, cr. £3563 16s 9d; Highways loan account, cr., £1429 Os Gd. Engineer’s Report. Eastern Riding.—Maintenance gravel has been placed on the following roads in the vicinity of Ashhurst: Greatford-Woodville highway, 684 yards, Bunnytkorpe-Ashhurst road, 444 yards, Pohangina road, 170 yards, Feilding-Ash hurst 140 yards. In addition, a reserve dump has been placed at the top of the Gorge hill. The first bill on Spur road has also received a coating of fine gravel, and some toX'Sirs have been carried out on the Aorangi road. Work on the large culvert (10ft. by Bft.) on the Feilding road has been proceeded with and completed as far as the top of the walls. The balance of this work will be completed next week. The grader has been continuously at work and is now able to devote more attention to secondary roads. Sealing Contract.—The contractors have now made a start on the final coat of the Himitangi-Ashhurst Highway, end about 30 chains have been completed to date. Preparation work on the section of the Greatford-Woodville highway from Wycherley’s corner to the Gorge has been completed, and crushing plant is now being shifted. Western riding: Two concrete pipe

culverts have been put in on McKay’s line and one on Makino road. The drain at the end of Wilson's line has been filled in with the grader and portion of Makara road widened. The rough stones on the upper portion of Makino road and Tokorangi road have been removed. A good deal of maintenance work has been done on the Reu Rcu road. The metalled portion has been repaired and the watcrtables on the hill at the far end cleaned out. Protective works have been carried out at the foot of this hill. The grader has been going continuously in this riding and now that the work at Ashhurst has been completed the activities of this grader can be confined to the western end of the riding. The crushing plant at .Monzios’ ford has been started and at present West street hill and the road from the crusher to Kiin-fcol-ton are receiving attention. It is intended to continue crushing fine maintenance gravel for the balance of this week and then to make a start on the preparation work on the TaonuiBunnybhorpe road.
