Hindu Who Struck Dividend of £4OO
PINED FOR PETTY xfiEFT Special to Times. AUCKLAND, Last Night. Madhu Kara, alias Charlie Bombay, is famous. He once had a tickeit on a horse ’that paid the phenomenal price of £4oo—at least, that is all the Auckland police know him. This morning, with the help of an interpreter, Kara strenuously denied a charge in the Police Court that ho had stolen an overcoat and a pair of shoes valued at 26/-. Sub-Inspector McCarthy said that at the Takapuna races on Saturday a lady had left her coat and shoes wrapped in a parcel in one of the shelter sheds on the course. Shortly afterwards, Kara had been seen going away, carrying tho coat, and he was seen to drop tho shoes. The owner of tho articles, Charlotte Oollard, and a gatekeeper gave evidence, the latter saying . that he stepped Kara as he was getting away. Mr. W. R. McKean asked Kara if he had taken the shoes and coat. “No, master, was the reply. “I had some drink.” ' Kara was • fined £3, with tho alternative of 14 days in Mount Eden.
