In an Airplane

Above the clouds in soaring flight, Upheld on arms of bedrock air Aloft with wings 1 ' The dream of centuries come true, No longer may the eagle spurn Men’s low estate. Humanity has rent its chains, And mounts the sky as readily As do the birds. What further victories will come As men more clearly recognise Their heritage! For all the bonds that, ages gone, Have seemed to bind them down to earth In slavery, At last are being proved no more Than false beliefs that limit thought, Without true claim. And thus all progress humanly Foretells the day of broader farfge And greater power; It points to peace and liberty ' And as the airplane finds its scope In higher realms, So must humanity’s true aims Find inspiration mid the skiei Of lofty thought! Arthur S. Hollis.
