After Winter Cheque Has Faded Out

BUTCHER IDLE AND DISORDERLY A charge of being idle and disorderly was preferred against a butcher named John Davis, aged 32, in the Palmerston North Magistrate's Court yesterday. According to the police, after accused came to Palmerston North, his winter cheque soon faded out. He went to an hotel and paid 9s for bed and breakfast but had continued to be a boarder without finding payment.

Mr. Merton, who pleaded for accused, stated that Davis had a job at Longburn to go to in a week’s time and ho suggested a conviction with discharge so that accused could go to his employment. Senior-Sergeant Whitehouse observed in reply, that what Counsel had said might bo alright but his experience of Davis was that he was as untruthful a man as one could find. He told the police he had paid £3 for hi 3 board. The Magistrate (Mr. J .L. Stout) decided to remand accused for sentence until Saturday so that it could be ascertained if he had work to go to as alleged. "I don’t want to turn him loose during show week,” added the Magistrate.
