Five Boomed Dwelling Destroyed. At 3.30 o’clock on Sunday morning, the call of the local fire bell aroused Shannon residents with its long, loud pealing. The fire was situated in Grey street, where a five Toomed wooden dwelling, occupied and belonging to Mr. O. Johansen, was totally destroyed by fire. When the brigade arrived on the scene, it was found that the nearest fire plug was at tho corner by the Albion hotel and the length of hose would not reach the dwelling. A bucket brigade was formed to prevent the fire reaching Mr. F. Foster’s dwell-

ing and the furniture was removed. When tho fire was nearly burnt out, it. was discovered that the hose could just reach from a plug in Stout street, so it was connected up and brought via the bowling green. A good pressure of water effectually stopped any chances of the fire spreading. It was a fortunate occurrence that there was no wind blowing. The occupants of the house were away for the week-end and the origin of the fire is unknown.

Golf. The match versus Otaki was postponed owing to the inclement weather. Next Saturday the Foxton club will pay a visit to Shannon. S. Pedersen, with a handicap of 40, was the winner of the Buckley cup last week-end.
